Now former chair
Becky Vaughn defeated me in the race for chair of the Oconee County Democratic Committee. Seems some of the members thought my leadership style left a little something to be desired. I gave it my best effort for the last year. I never once sought reimbursement for a single expense, a move I now regret. Becky will do a fine job of running the meetings, if she does not get stuck in Atlanta traffic as was the case this evening.
Now that I am no longer chair, I can at least take off the gloves when it comes to crafting letters, blog entries and columns. At one point this evening there was a long discussion about the possibility of co-chairs. Stubbornly I did not want to be vice-chair. I did not think we had enough members to have factions, but I guess I was wrong about that.
Bill Yarbrough will take over the duties of vice chair along with Jonathan Veit, Violet Dawe and Herb West will reprise their roles.
So I never thought of this blog as being the official voice of the Oconee County Democratic Committee, but I guess it will be all the less so now. The pain is there to tell us something.
I hope nothing but continued success for the Oconee Democratic committee, but my motivation, enthusiam and desire to help them with it have been greatly diminished. Tonight Terry Holley talked about his experience with running for Congress, and it at least put the fire back in my belly to hold my head high as I left the room. This was not the most pleasant experience in my 12 months as the leader of the committee. I appreciate the people who turned out on the coldest night of the year.
Among other criticisms I received:
*I did not run a meeting very well.
*I did not stand up to Kate McDaniel.
*I looked to others for help at the meetings.
*I should not have talked to reporters.
I am sure I ruffled some feathers. I tried to raise the profile of the Oconee County Democratic Committee as best I could given the zero resources and support. There was an awful lot of self-fulfilling phophesies of negativity in that room that evening. My mom warned me how mean politics can be, and I found out this evening.
Seems Charlie Norwood may be closer to resigning or being forced to resign with his liver cancer than we may be led to believe by the mainstream political media. Holley made it seem like Norwood would be lucky to be alive by Christmas.
Becky is having a Christmas party in a few weeks in her Jennings Mill house on Meriweather.
