Farmland protection is important - and here is a note from Russ Page via Tony Glenn

The Landowners Meeting on March 15, 2007 at 7:00 PM in the Oconee County Library Auditorium will be the kick off meeting for the Oconee Partnership for Farmland Protection 2007 Program. Please help to reach all those who might be interested in protecting their farm with an Agricultural Conservation Easement, or those who might benefit from the considerable federal and state tax incentive programs. It will be an educational meeting which can help any landowner see the value in protecting their land, and see how they can benefit from putting a conservation easement on their land. Those who are interested in protecting their land for "Agriculture", for a "River Walk", for "Open Space", or just for land conservation purposes should attend this meeting.

Thank you..to all of you who have signed a letter of interest either for the 2005 or 2006 Oconee Partnership for Farmland Protection Program. Thank you for your interest, thank you for signing up, thank you for your continued support during the application process.

The past several years have provided a learning and growing experience for all of us. The Oconee Partnership for Farmland Protection, with your help, and that of the Athens Land Trust, the Oconee County Board of Commissioners and other concerned citizens have been able to establish a successful, ongoing, well funded program. We have sought and obtained the support, both financial and practical, from the public, the BOC the Georgia Land Conservation Program and the USDA –NRCS Farm and Ranchland Protection Program. Farmland Protection has become a “Budget Line Item” for Oconee County. The Partnership was awarded the first ever Grant given by the Georgia Land Conservation Program. This year the Partnership was awarded our Third Grant from the USDA Farm and Ranchland Protection Program. We, collectively, were able to turn a $75,000 commitment from the County BOC into $1,536,000 in Farmland Protection in 2006.

There is a growing interest from other Georgia Counties as to how we have developed this Partnership for the Protection of Farmland. There have been numerous phone calls and inquires seeking information and requests for presentations on what we did and how we did it.

We now are formally starting our 2007 program. Our first meeting will be held at 7:00 PM March 15, 2007 in the Oconee County Library Auditorium. This informational meeting will be held in conjunction with the Athens Land Trust, Tax Attorneys, Oconee Partnership for Farmland Protection, the Forestry Legacy Program, and other Oconee Landowners, who may be able to take advantage of other land protection methods. Topics to be covered include “What is a Conservation Easement?” “2007 Oconee Farmland Protection Program”, “Georgia’s Forest Legacy Program”, and “Tax incentives for Land Conservation”. Breakout sessions on each topic will follow.

Please come with your questions, and sign up to be included in the 2007 Farmland Protection Program.

Invite your tax consultant or accountant if you wish.

Sincerely,

Russ Page
