Ponderings on the first five Democrats running in the 10th.

The five announced Democratic candidates for the 10th District US Congress special election in Georgia for Dr. Charlie Norwood's seat appeared before a packed house in the fourth floor of the Athens - Clarke County courthouse Thursday evening. People came from Oconee, Habersham, Madison and other counties as well.

Denise Freeman found a new friend in me. This lady is incredibly impressive. She needs to visit white churches as much as possible between now and June 19th. She might surprise more than a few people. She has the most votes against Norwood in a previous election 2000. She lives in Lincolnton and knows the district well. She is a Baptist minister. She could be our Heath Shuler but more likely our Barack Obama. She resonates positive energy although she might be a little fuzzy on the wonky details of how she might tweak Charlie Norwood's now languishing patient bill of rights, at least according to Tim Bryant's talk show this morning on Newstalk 1340 WGAU AM

Jim Marlow is the only person with the resources to run well after a run-off, which I think is inevitable with the ever increasing field. This former Yahoo marketing executive has connections to Lincoln County and may be the only person running full time. He has a headquarters opening up on Milledge Avenue in the Butler Building in Athens. He has nothing to do with North Georgia Tech. He is an outsider. I jope he gets involved in small towns and campuses across North Georgia. He also hired local product Charlie Bailey to run his campaign.

Jeff Reynolds radiated harmony and joy as well. We could do a whole lot worse than elect this person as well. He is articulate and well spoken, as you would expect someone from the Rabun Gap ordained minister. It is the country old school over 30 white men that Democratic party has been losing in droves, so his candidacy and activism gives us all hope and inspiration.

Evita (as in Vida Blue) Paschall has more than the family's famous chicken restaurant and the Civil Rights history in her favor. She is an attorney in the Augusta area offering real solutions for the poverty and economic disparity in the area already before she was running for Congress as a probono participant in the legal arena.

Terry Holley has demonstrated his grasp of the salient issues in the area. He did get 56,000+ votes a few months back in a most recent and last losing race against Dr. Norwood. He described the district in three distinct geographic groupings which does point out the disparities of ideals in the Augusta, top tier areas and the greater Athens area including Madison, Oglethorpe, Oconee and Greene counties.

Habersham County is having another of these get to know the candidate events soon:

Good news! The meeting to decide on one Democratic
candidate for the 10th has been set for March 31 in
Habersham County. Anyone who has any specific
concerns or questions for the candidates should let me
know so I can bring them with me on that day.
