The Oconee County Democrats will host a lecture about global warming by
Dr. James W. Porter, a professor at UGA’s Institute of Ecology, on
Sunday, April 29th, at 7 PM. A discussion will follow his talk, which
is titled "Too Hot To Handle: Science and Partisanship in the Global
Warming Debate."

This free event will be held at the Sanctuary (located at the corner of
Barnett Shoals Road and 1st Street) in Watkinsville. The public is
invited to attend to learn more about how serious the threat is here in
Georgia and what steps the state -- and individuals -- should be taking
to address climate change.

Dr. Porter is the Josiah Meigs Distinguished Professor at the Institute
of Ecology and holds a joint appointment with the Department of Marine
Sciences. He studies the Georgia coast and Florida reefs and has
testified before Congress about threats to those fragile and
irreplaceable ecosystems. He has been awarded, among other honors, the
Meigs Teaching Award in 2003.

The presentation Dr. Porter shares with audiences is lively,
informative, and important. He described his materials this way: “What
I will show are new scientific findings that have extraordinary
implications for Georgians. People will see for themselves some of the
data that have emerged since former Vice President Al Gore's ‘An
Inconvenient Truth’ came out.”

Elected officials who serve Oconee County are especially encouraged to
attend.

People may drop by about twenty minutes early to take a test ride in a
Toyota Prius. Four or more hybrid vehicles will be on hand for rides.

Becky Vaughn, chair of the Oconee County Democratic Party, said the
event has been designed to address two of the group’s recent resolutions:

We affirm the need to take steps as a nation, county and as
individuals to address global climate change and serve as good stewards
of our planet.

We affirm the need for citizens to listen to one another, seek out
responsible sources of information, and ratchet down the level of
animosity in the political sphere.
