Interesting encounter with Dr. Paul Broun last night at Athens Academy and other assorted thoughts about the latest in the 10th District race
Even though I may not agree with their politics, I like to go and introduce myself to most candidates who won't try to punch my pick-up truck. So last night I saw a relatively youthful looking Dr. Paul Broun in a red polo shirt and straw hat, age 61, at the Athens Academy spring scrimmage football game and BBQ. We argued and turned heads in the relatively small and predominantly Republican crowd about the possibility of a Democrat winning. Dr. Broun told me that Democrats have no chance, and I told him that Democrats do have a chance, especially if 35 Americans a week are getting slaughtered in Iraq through next month.
He kind of ushered me away from the paltry crowd so as not to scorch the ears of the nearby Republican elite faithful. To his credit, Dr. Broun was very forthright, honest and compelling in his discussion, claiming various Democrats are going to vote for him. I am sure there are more than a handful of lifelong Democrats in the over 60 crowd locally that remembers his father and all the work he did for Georgians of every stripe. I tried my best to get him to spew venom about militia-wannabe Bill Greene or Jim Whitehead, but to no avail. He did say a lot about Athens Academy parents Brian Kemp and Bill Cowsert endorsing Whitehead, with repeated claims about the GOP leadership anointing Whitehead the chosen one before any votes have been counted. We basically agreed to disagree. His most outlandish claim to me was that a vote for Democrat James Marlow is really a vote for Whitehead, but did begrudgingly acknowledge that a July 17 run-off is likely.
In the highly unlikely event a Whitehead - Broun run - off occurs, I would hold my nose and vote for Broun merely for the added bonus of having a local congressmen in DC. The Banner-Herald today has a great story about all the homemade videos made by bloggers and off-spring of the various candidates. I loved listening to Denise Freeman rip Tim Bryant a new asshole yesterday on the radio, and evidently Whitehead is showing his cowardice by backing out of the June 6 debate in Athens because the press has been ripping him a new asshole. Hope the Athens Press Club adds a few local bloggers to the mix of those asking questions at the debate. It will be interesting to see who campaigns at Southworks a few blocks away today and tomorrow in Oconee County.
