Russ Page: Oconee residents should be heard today, Thursday
Story updated at 7:44 PM on Monday, August 20, 2007
Big decisions, which will change Oconee County forever, are being made every day. Don't sit by and watch it happen, and when it's done, wonder whether you could have done anything to change a particular outcome.
There are two opportunities this week alone to learn about possibilities for Oconee County's future, and to voice your opinion to help mold that future.
At 6:30 p.m. today in the county courthouse, a forum on the county's comprehensive plan is scheduled. Oconee residents have an obligation to see what it says, and to provide their input into the process of molding the county over the next several years.
At 7 p.m. Thursday, a countywide meeting to discuss transferable development rights will be held in the North Oconee High School auditorium. The transfer of development rights is a land-use method by which a county can influence where future development will occur, and at the same time protect specific areas of the county forever. Rick Pruetz, a nationally known land planner and TDR consultant, will explain this method of influencing land use at the countywide meeting. All developers, land planners, landowners, county officials and interested citizens should attend.
For more information on either of these meetings, visit the Oconee County government's Web site at http://www.oconeecounty.net, in the Joint Comprehensive Plan information section. Get involved. There are many decisions that will be made soon. With or without you, those decisions will decide the future of Oconee County.
