Farm preservation is a welcome gift this time of year

Farms are something I hold dear but really do not have all that much experience with except detassling corn as a 14 year old kid in Iowa and various relatives and state fair type things. Essentially I am a city kid, but farms and agriculture are something I hold near and dear to my heart. Sometimes I think they are rapidly disappearing from our lovely county, so any time local land is set aside to be used in perpetuity as agriculture, I applaud. Many of the reasons I am Democratic and will be the rest of my life sprout from my agrarian roots.

Here is some interesting local news that really has nothing to do with the above article but is indeed agricultural in nature:

reetings everyone,

With Thanksgiving this week, I want to take a moment to thank all those people who have been making the choice to eat locally and support our local farmers, our local economy, and our community.

Thank you.

This movement cannot move forward without you...or the hard work of amazing farmers having to endure a trying year who also deserve thanks.

Thank you, farmers, for feeding us this year and for planting the seeds for a better tomorrow.

And while the farmers have planted the seeds for this tasty and more sustainable future, it is up to us, all of us, to tend and grow this vision for an economically viable, socially just, and environmentally friendly tomorrow.

I would like everyone mark your calendars because on Saturday, December 1st, PLACE will be hosting its third AFANS (Athens Food Activist Networking Session) at Alps Road Elementary School from 2:00pm-4:00pm.
Refreshments and free babysitting will be provided.

At the first AFANS, we took time to meet one another on a rare rainy June afternoon to shake hands, to share stories, and start building friendships. At the second AFANS, we collectively defined, in broad strokes, what a strong accessible local food culture is and affirmed that we want it. At this AFANS, we will strengthen our friendships, more clearly define our vision, and begin strategizing ways to realize this vision.

As always, AFANS is open to everyone interested in helping create a strong accessible local food culture in our wonderful town of Athens, Georgia. We will have representation from many of Athens' local food organizations (Athens Urban Food Collective, Athens Food Policy Council, PLACE, Slow Food Athens) as well as state and international organizations (Georgia Organics and Heifer International). If you are interested in getting involved but don't know the best place to start, this will be a great time to meet the people and organizations already doing great work.

We are also very interested in making many new connections. Food and agriculture touches our lives in many and different ways. We hope to reflect the systemic nature of food by having attendance from:
  • Anti-Hunger Advocates
  • Community Leaders/Organizers
  • Education Advocates and Educators
  • Environmental Advocates
  • Green Developers
  • Farmers
  • Food Service Professionals
  • Foodies
  • Local Government Officials
  • Parents
  • Preachers
  • Preventative Health Care Advocates
  • Small Business Professionals

If you have contacts in any of these areas please forward them this email. Activism does not mean always mean marching in the street. Activism means taking an active role in realizing this vision whether it's just participating in the conversation or really getting your hands in the dirt.

I hope that you will join in the conversation. Please RSVP to me, Craig Page at

craigwpage@gmail.com
, if you are interested in attending (especially if you are going to be bringing children, so we can have a good ratio of volunteer babysitters to children).

If you are interested in learning more about AFANS and what has been accomplished at past AFANS, please visit PLACE's website,

Thanks and we look forward to seeing you soon.
