North High Shoals election gets nastier and more personal
The ground zero of political discontent in Oconee County is now in tiny town North High Shoals, where a dozen votes can swing an election. That is only place this side of Bogart where we have a contested election in the county tomorrow. While the election is for a whole lot more than just smart growth versus overgrown development, the debate does essentially boil down to that simple calculus. Steve Holzman is running against silent incumbent and brother of the Mayor Wade Thomas.
In the many years of going to meetings in North High Shoals, I do not believe I have ever heard the council member Thomas ever open his mouth during a meeting, while his brother the mayor seldom closes his. Small town politics are an interesting and engaging situation where everybody knowns every one else business before they do. North High Shoals name has been dragged through the mud with various charges of impropriety in campaigning and the tiny town in under investigation from the state for these electoral inconsistencies.
Mayor Thomas took out a half page ad in the local legal organ to try and deflect some of the controversy away from him and his brother. The slash and burn developers have also come out in support of the status quo and are afraid the balance of power will shift out their pocket if Holzman is elected.
Recently homemade signs have sprouted up in a couple of yards from a certain local developers who is reportedly working like gangbusters to make sure Holzman stays out of office. Election irregularities and fraud charges have made North High Shoals something of an unusual arena for such shenanigans this close to the election (tomorrow).
Susan Marcantonio and Tony Capomacchia have a large development they are trying to put together in North High Shoals. She's been going gang busters trying to get votes for the Mayor, his brother Wade, and Eddy. She was out putting flyers on mail boxes this weekend (a Federal offense). I also saw some signs up at the Election Supervisor's house (Sandy Brooks)....seems like a conflict of interest to me
I would urge all people registered to vote in North High Shoals municipal election to please turn out to vote tomorrow and make sure your vote counts to throw the rascals out and elect an honest council member with the best interests of the beautiful little city at heart with a mark by Steve Holzman's name.
