[Fwd: [oconeedemocrats] Minutes from January 3 meeting]
*Oconee** **County** Democratic Committee meeting*
*January 3, 2008*
*Oconee** **County** Courthouse, **Watkinsville**, **Georgia*
**)
**
* *
*Others present*: Karen Solheim (OCHS YDs); Judi Wright; Sharon Eubanks
Chair Becky Vaughn called the meeting to order at 7:27 pm.
A quorum was declared present.
*Minutes*: The minutes from the November 1, 2007 meeting were approved
unanimously after a motion by Sarajane Love and second by Pat Priest.
The committee did not meet in December.
*Treasurer's* *Report*: Treasurer Violet Dawe was absent.
*By-Laws*: Because of changes to the Oconee County voting precincts
(upon which our committee districts and posts are based), the by-laws
will need to be revised reflecting a new committee structure. Herb &
Myrna are willing to work on this but would like assistance. Herb had
just received from Bill Yarbrough prior to the meeting a list of the new
precincts with the number of registered voters in each. Bill said the
county's IT department is still working on the new precinct map. The
committee decided the matter of the new committee districts and post
would be the subject for the February 16 Blue Hats meeting. The goal is
to have the proposed amendments to the by-laws completed and presented
at the March 6 meeting of the committee, and to be voted on at the April
3 meeting.
*Membership*: Half of the committee posts will be up for election this
summer. The election will be held at a county caucus which takes place
within 45 days following the General Primary. Since the primary is July
15, 2008, the caucus will have to be between July 15 and August 31. The
election of posts will conform to the new committee structure that will
be outline in the revised by-laws.
*Officers*: The election of committee officers for 2009-2010 will take
place prior to December 31, 2008.
*Community Service:*
o *Adopt-a-Road*: The next pick-up is scheduled for January 12,
beginning at 9:30 am. *Sarajane* is the "captain" for this clean-up
(with the help of Pat P.). She has secured permission for us to park at
the Barber Creek Fire Station and to deposit the collected trash in
their dumpsters. Karen will try to encourage the OCHS Young Dems to help.
*Fundraising Opportunities:*
o *Bike Ride: Jonathan* will check the April and May calendars for other
bike events and report at the February meeting with a proposed date, so
that planning can begin.
o *Event at Artist Studio:* Since no local artist with an in-county
studio has offered to host such an event, *Pat P*. will again approach
Rebecca Wood (a local artist whose studio is in Athens).
o *Pat P*. also suggested a "roast" or celebration of /Flagpole/
editor/publisher Pete McCommons. An alternative would be to "roast" or
celebrate Vinnie Williams. Combining either of these with a dinner or
BBQ in June or August was suggested. Possible locations will be explored.
*Public Awareness—**Pat Priest**:*
o *Book Group:* The next meeting will be held on Thursday, January 17 at
the Five Points Deli on Epps Bridge Parkway starting at 6:00 pm to
discuss /The Temple Bombing/. Books for subsequent monthly meetings have
been chosen.
o *Walk in the Park*: The naturalist-guide walk at Harris Shoals Park
was held on December 26. Only one couple showed up to participate. The
weather may have played a factor.
o *Movie Night:* The next event will be on January 21, 2008 to see and
then discuss the movie "Outsourced."
o *Fourth Sunday Series:* Becky will be out of town and unavailable to
speak on January 27, so *Pat P*. and *Judi* will work on putting
together a program.
o *Other programs:* *Pat P*. continues to generate ideas and is working
on a photography workshop, an energy-efficient workshop and "Speak Out"
events focusing on veterans, health care and medical issues, and
education/teachers.
o *Presidential Primary*: *Pat P*. and *Judi* will pursue offering rides
to the polls on February 5 and will work on publicity for doing so.
o *NBAF*: A meeting on the proposed bioagricultural facility will be
held on January 22, 2008 at either 7:00or 7:30 pm at the UGA Continuing
Education building.
*Sub-Committees*: Chairs are still needed for the *Affirmative
Action/Candidate Recruitment (Becky* will ask Rich Rusk*), Community*
*Service*, and *Elections/GOTV* sub-committees.
*Blue* *Hats*: Blue Hats will meet January 12 at Krimson Kafe to "talk
trash" following the morning road cleanup. Everyone planning to attend
should contact Rita in advance (706-207-8535 or 706-769-0187 or
bonanzagirl@hotmail.com <mailto:bonanzagirl@hotmail.com>) so she can
reserve tables at Krimson Kafe.
*Next* *meeting*: Thursday, February 7, 2007. In addition to agenda
items from above, the possibility of changing the meeting date from
first Thursdays to another weeknight, such as second Tuesdays, will be
considered.
As there was no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:40 pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Herb West
Secretary
