Please support & attend Feb. 16 MFMC Talent Show

The Moore's Ford Memorial Committee Tri-County Talent Show is always an entertaining showcase of our youth from Walton, Oconee and Clarke counties, demonstrating how horrible lynching deaths 50+ years ago at the Walton-Oconee border can result in an opportunity for education and enlightenment half a century later.

Woven brightly,
Daniel J. Matthews, Jr.

High School Talent Sought for MLK Celebration

Feb. 16 Tri-County Talent Show Set for Oconee

As a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to honor the King Holiday, the Moore's Ford Memorial Committee is issuing a "Call for Performing Artists" to prepare acts and artwork for its Sixth Annual Tri-County Talent Show/Martin Luther King Celebration, set for 7 p.m., Sat., Feb. 16 at the Oconee County Civic Center.

Currently enrolled public high school students, grades nine through twelve, from Athens-Clarke, Oconee and Walton Counties are eligible to compete for $1000 worth of prize money. Permitted acts include songs, music, dance and step teams, poetry and dramatic readings, both solo and group. An art exhibit will accompany the talent show.

"We realize our talent show is late for the King holiday," said  MFMC secretary Rich Rusk. "But these shows are infused with the spirit of Dr. King. We urge everyone to attend."

The benefit performance will raise money for Moore's Ford Memorial Scholarships.  The multiracial citizens group, formed to commemorate two African American couples killed by racial violence at the Moore's Ford Bridge in 1946, awards seven $1,000 scholarships to area high school seniors each Spring as "living memorials" to George and Mae Murray Dorsey and Roger and Dorothy Malcom.

Performers and artists should focus on the Talent Show's theme - Live the Dream, Celebrate the Dream, Achieve the Dream  on Dr. King and his legacy, or the more general themes of social justice and racial healing. Auditions will be held at 6-8 p.m., February 4 and 6 at the civic center, next to Oconee County High School on Hog Mountain Road.

   For information, call  706-769-0988; 706-202-7802or richrusk@bellsouth.net.
