Back in the saddle again

I have been negligent in my posting with various responsibilities and illness. Persevere kind reader and find the following links from the Oconee Banner-Herald, oops I mean Athens of course.

First, SICKNESS, everybody wash their hands, cover their mouths after coughing and please keep your kids out of school if they are sick. With spring break next week, perhaps we shall see some abatement of the massive amounts of flu, bronchitis, et cetera that seems to be decimating our school system ranks

Second, THANKS, to the kid Cameron K. from across the street for bringing my dog back after she nefariously decided to sneak down the street with the long-ass chain still around her neck yesterday morning.

Third, NO THANKS to my son for flushing copious amounts of paper towels wrapped around fingernail clippers down his loo. He did handle an afterschool crisis at school with diplomatic aplomb though so I have to give him credit where credit is due.

Fourth, GLAD WE CAN ALL GET ALONG DEPARTMENT, to the Oconee County Board of Commissioners for passing something good on Barber Creek waste treatment. The staff of the Attorney General decided it is cool for the BOC to decide what they want when they want with whom they want watching when it comes to waste water.

Fifth, PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH to a certain local talk radio host who complains about people putting forth false comparisons to Nazis (and I concur on that part at least) when his favorite text-messaging State Representative did exactly that to the Mayor of Athens a while back and she gave him both barrels full of righteous indignation right back. It is never smart to casually play the fascist card whether to government officials or whomever, but especially ill-timed and planned when shoved in the face of someone who is Jewish. I will give the talk radio host props for getting a better guest to talk about the Holocaust exhibit at the Watkinsville Library.

Sixth, NOT IN MY FRONT YARD award, to the power line people building across Lane Creek - this is one of those lose-lose propositions that I do not pretend to have an answer to, but I will give props to Oconee County Administrative Officer Alan Theriault and Lane Creek resident ethical props for pulling himself out of the loop properly on this debate. Lane Creek is a beautiful golf course but it should not get preferential treatment because some people whack a small white ball around a lot of greens and fairways.

Seventh, TUITION FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS - if you want to send your kid to the much-heralded Oconee County School system and you do not live in Oconee County, then you have to pay. Now I do think employees of the OC School System should get a hefty discount if they want to bring their kids to where they work. I know teachers in nearby school systems that bring their OC kids to the public schools where they work, not in OC and they do not have to pay tuition. I am not in favor of vouchers for schools, public or private.

Eighth, GLAD WE HAVE DEPUTIES IN CHURCH PARKING LOTS IN BOGART - I must give proper support and kudos to Sheriff Scott Berry and his staff for releasing to the media the various documents surrounding the murder of a motorcyclist in Bogart and also that they have Sheriff Deputies parked in the far reaches of the county at various times as well as extremely fast response time to calls and wondered how far the street was from where to this person was shot. There are lots of unanswered questions about this case and it will continue to be the subject of much conversation and speculation in Athens and Oconee County.

Ninth, WATCH OUT WHAT YOU BITE AND WHERE YOU BITE IT - beware of beef jerky salesmen in banks and I understand why local authorities are letting the Feds get their teeth into this man's felonious past first.

Tenth, the local congressional race sure got interesting with the introduction of an extreme right wing single issue nut job in State Representative Nancy Schaefer of Turnerville. She makes Paul Broun look liberal by comparison. Perhaps she will siphon off some of Barry Fleming's support as well as Dr. Broun's northern portion of the district.
