Courthouse move galvanizes Oconee opposition
There comes a time in some political campaigns where people of good conscious must take a stand. These watershed moments are seldom as well defined as the one emerging out of the wake of several Oconee County Board of Commission members wanting to move the Courthouse from its present location. Chairmain G. Melvin Davis, and BOC members Don "Isshures" Norris and Jim Luke are generally believed to be the Gang of Three wanting to move the Courthouse out of Watkinsville to some area currently outside the current city limits.
This movement evidently arose out of the secret meeting in Madison in December. We shall see how this manifests itself it the campaign, but suffice to say that challengers Johnny Pritchett, John Daniell and Sarah Bell stand to profit the most from the latest secret shenanigans done behind the scenes and even out of the county.
Watkinsville Mayor Jim Luken took a very courageous stand against this ill-advised maneuver at the end of the City Council meeting Wednesday evening. He is not one to trifle in petty political matters or to posture needlessly. Luken is a man of principal and character, and this is a time to find out which side are you on, boy, which side are you on.
I did not attend the official opening of the Oconee County G.O.P. headquarters at Market Square but I would well imagine that the gathering was all a-twitter about the ramifications of the proposed courthouse move. I stood in the rain for an hour instead watching my son play soccer up the road.
The development with the grocery store anchor Mike Maxey was talking about had to have been the proposed LaVista Road development near Athens Academy. I did not hear of many in that neighborhood wanting that shopping center placed in an already busy corridor.
Johnny Pritchett did not name the sidewalk in Bishop in honor of Courtney Gale - thanks Adam for pointing that out.
