tonight's conversation -- and a challenge!

The latest from the de facto leader of the Oconee County Democratic committee - Pat Priest

Woven brightly,
Daniel J. Matthews, Jr.

Just a reminder that tonight (Sunday) at 7 the Oconee Democrats are
hosting our Sunday Series conversation with Dr. Rich Clark about polling
and politics. That's at the public library on Experiment Station Road.

Dr. Clark runs the Carl Vinson Institute's Peach State Poll that keeps
tabs on public opinion in Georgia -- and he's also running as a Democrat
for School Board in Oconee, so we thought you should meet him!

I also wanted to tell you about a challenge the Oconee Democrats' book
group is issuing to people in Oconee and beyond. We're asking people to
read both Senator McCain's autobiography AND Senator Obama's and then
meet to talk about first McCain's ideas and background (in August) and
then Obama's (in September). Join us if you can. We'll be getting
more information about that challenge out in a little while, but here
are the dates and titles:

August 21
"Worth the Fighting For: A Memoir" by John McCain

September 18
"The Audacity of Hope" by Barack Obama

The Books Galore owner (Debbie Wagner) has both those autobiographies in
stock, and aside from the normal 25% discount she provides for book
group titles, she's going to take $1 off when people buy both books.

Meanwhile, consider joining us for July's book, the Pulitzer
Prize-winning "Founding Brothers," a best-selling book the The New York
Times Book Review described this way: "Even those familiar with the
"Revolutionary generation" will find much in its pages to captivate and
enlarge their understanding of our nation's fledgling years."

It's great -- with a who-shot-first analysis of the Burr-Hamilton duel
and another chapter, for example, on a fateful dinner that ended with a
compromise that involved moving the nation's capital to a site along the
Potomac.

We'll discuss that book by Joseph Ellis July 17th.

The book group meets the Third Thursday of every month at Five Points
Deli on Epps Bridge Parkway at 6:15.

Hope to see you!
