Endorsement from Tony Glenn

Dr. Tony Glenn gives his view on the primary election.

Woven brightly,
Daniel J. Matthews, Jr.

Afternoon all,

When Courtney Gale, Michael Reuter, and I decided to form Citizens for South Oconee County, we did so keeping in mind that the group should be a broad-based organization advocating principles of smart growth in the county as a whole, while protecting the distinguishing rural qualities that the southern portion of the county exemplifies.

We feel that CSOC has had a significant positive impact on the county, and we are proud of what we have accomplished.  We have participated or voiced our thoughts on a range of rezone issues, ordinances, and infrastructure projects.  We have cosponsored three political forums.  Most recently, we had a role in persuading the county to begin webcasting its BOC meetings.

In the beginning we had two tacit goals for CSOC.  First, we did not want to be considered a NIMBY organization, and as noted above we have strived to be proactive on various issues.  Second, we wanted to stay out of politics, if possible.  Well, Courtney, Michael, and I now feel it is time that we spoke in favor of two candidates, incumbent Commissioners Margaret Hale (Post 3) and Chuck Horton (Post 4).

For most of you I do not need to outline the various reasons why we support Commissioners Hale and Horton.  Suffice it to say that they have strongly supported our organization and other like it.  Margaret and Chuck also are two of the most approachable commissioners on the BOC.  They have always been willing to speak to people by email, phone, or face-to-face.  Most importantly, they have a strong sense of balanced growth with an emphasis on neighborhoods, communities, quality of life, and broad fiscal considerations.

As you know, both Commissioners Hale and Horton have challengers that are intimately tied to the development community.  I encourage you to take a few minutes and read the recent posts to Lee Becker's blog (www.oconeecountyobservations.blogspot.com) concerning the ethical considerations of such close connections.

For the most part, this email is preaching to the choir.  Yet, if you haven't done so, be sure to talk with your neighbors and friends over the remaining few days of this campaign.  Let's re-elect Margaret Hale and Chuck Horton!!!

My sincere thanks,

Tony Glenn
