Obama Team Oconee

More Oconee County Democratic Committee and Republican, Greens, Libertarians and other Independents should help out Oconee for Obama.
Daniel J. Matthews, Jr.

Here's a summary of our meeting Tues eve July 22 at the Sanctuary in Watkinsville:

Five more people found us! Welcome Dan Matthews, Sarahjane Love, Elyse Lang, and Keruh Andrews (please forgive any misspellings!). Hope you'll keep coming back . . . we really need your help with voter registration.

Who are we? Our group was formed on July 1st by the Athens Regional Field Director of the Obama Campaign. Our organizing fellow is Faye York, who told us she is completing the fellow program this week (bye, Faye!) and that our new liason with the Obama Campaign is Tiffany Kingery, Field Organizer (Welcome, Tiffany!). Our charge is to help get Barack Obama elected by aggressively engaging in voter registration until the Oct 6th deadline at which point our focus will shift to GOTV activities (as in Get Out the Vote).

The following voter registration activities occurred since our last meeting:
-Voter registration was offered at the Sunday School Congress at Shady Grove Baptist Church by Barb and Carl.
-Door-to-door voter registration was completed on Morrison Street, one of the African-American communities in Watkinsville, by Elaine and Carl.
-Pat reported on voter registration that will begin this week at Our Daily Bread under the direction of Madelyn.

Carolyn Davenport was present to help us strategize our voter registration efforts in the African-American churches she helped us identify (Churches listed on the attach Word.doc). The plan is for a member of our group to select one or more of these churches to contact at least once a week throughout the remainder of the campaign. The initial contact can be either via telephone or in-person. For example: When you talk to the person listed (see attached list) as a potential helper at that church, explain that their name was suggested by Carolyn Davenport as someone who might be able to help you with voter registration in their community (church, neighborhood, at work, etc.). Tell them you would like to provide them with at least 4 voter registration forms each week through the Oct 6 deadline. Tell them you would like to pick-up the completed forms each week and leave them another set. Then bring those forms to our Team meeting each week so that  they can be passed on to Tiffany, Obama Headquarters. Tell them, if they think it would be helpful, you are willing to attend one of their Sunday services to be introduced and to provide voter registration at the end of the service. Also suggest to the person that they choose at least two other members of their community who would also register 4 people each week.

Please consider becoming the contact person for one or more of these churches. Take a look at the attached list. If you prefer a particular church, let me know and I'll assign you on a first-come basis. Let's see if we can have one of us assigned to every church on the list by our next meeting.

Our next meeting is scheduled for 7:00pm Tuesday July 29th at the Sanctuary in Watkinsville. Looking forward to seeing you there!
