Voter Registration at Eagle Tavern on tne 4th of July - Oconee updates of interest

Pat Priest does an amazing job organizing a wide array of events in both Athens and Watkinsville. If there is a volunteer of the year award, she deserves it. Please try to attend as many events as you can on our nation's birthday and be thankful we live in such a great country and county.  The big news here is actual voter registration at Eagle Tavern and Bell's going on, which is the only way to perpetuate real change and coalition building beyond the forthcoming primary. The next

PS My current grammatical pet peeve of the moment are the people who insist on needlessly adding an apostrophe in the word veterans as far as the new park name is concerned. If the park belonged to one Veteran and we wanted to talk about his park, we could reference a "Veteran's Park" but anything short of that should never have an apostrophe in this circumstance.  Veterans are Veterans and I am glad some candidates took the political opportunity to further expoit them in a convenient opportunity to rename the park when it could have been done very easily three years ago except for those same people. Everyone who worked on the monument deserves congratulations and job well done. I hope all the names are spelled correctly and it is truly amazing how fast they built the tribute. Let us hope the tarnish wears off over time from slime and grime and crime committed in the name of the most sacred servants of our country. Would it be inappropriate to bring a big sign with Jim Ivey's face on it to the ceremony? Certainly, but appropriateness never entered into the equation in Ivey's crime. He should not be out of jail yet, but he supposedly is.

Four things I'll headline here. Please read below for more information
about these updates, and contact me for further details on any of it.

(Be sure to read the third point's information if you only have a minute
for an unbelievable story about a soldier at Walter Reed Hospital.)

Happy Independence Day!

1. Veterans Memorial dedication July 4th

2. Perfectly in sync with Independence Day and all it celebrates is our
book group choice: "Founding Brothers," which we'll discuss July 17.

3. Local Obama organizing is off to a strong start

4. Nominations extended for your choice for Dancing with Athens Stars
contestants through July 7th

1. Wanted to remind everyone that tomorrow morning (July 4th) in Oconee
County there's a dedication ceremony for the new Veterans Memorial at
Oconee Veterans Park at 9:30 am. That's the area formerly called the
Oconee Community Complex. There will be a ceremony and time afterward
to meet with military personnel and their families.

2. The Pulitzer Prize-winning book was also a best-seller. Wonderful!

3. Athens-area Obama organizers held an overflowing, get-right-to-it
meeting Tuesday night, and I am very encouraged and impressed. Many
people (among the 100+) said they had never been involved in a campaign
before, but they just had to step up. One woman, Faye, an Obama
"fellow" on leave from her life in Texas, told an amazing story about
what prompted her to get involved. She said she was at Walter Reed
Hospital and found a veteran crying. He was recovering from losing both
legs after a short stint in Iraq. She asked if she could help him, and
he said he had just received a letter from the military saying that they
wanted his signing bonus back because he had not served the agreed-upon
period of service. That's simply outrageous!

Faye is working with our Oconee-based team that will be working to get
people registered to vote in the county -- starting tomorrow, July 4th.
We're setting up a table from 10 to 3 at Eagle Tavern, where we will
provide voter registration forms and help people register in a
non-partisan way. We'll also be set up at Bell's tomorrow. If you'd
like to help out, feel free to call my cell (207-9959) or just drop by.
We're meeting again Tuesday evening to plan some upcoming voter
registration drives. Please let me know if you would like to be a part
of this great new team of friendly and dedicated volunteers working to
get Senator Obama and other Democratic candidates elected. I'm doing it
with that young disabled vet at Walter Reed in mind.

4. And lastly, Project Safe has extended the deadline for nominations
to July 7th, so if you know of someone who would be great for "Dancing
with Athens Stars," contact me for more information about where to
direct your nomination. Oconee Commissioner Chuck Horton, for example,
raised a lot of money this spring and had a dashing opening act that got
the show off to a strong start. He's a good sport and an excellent
commissioner.

Whew. That's it.

Happy Fourth!

Pat
