Oconee Democrats' update
Pat Priest is my hero. She does more for many groups and never clamors for credit, glory or honor. I am here to give her mad props. The following is an email from her, including an email from Alex DeGolia of Georgia for Obama.
1. Book Challenge underway
2. Dancing with the Stars (of Oconee!)
3. Obama (and other great candidates!)
1. We've postponed our Book Challenge to allow people more time to pick
up and read Senator McCain's autobiography ("Worth the Fighting For")
and Senator Obama's ("The Audacity of Hope"). We'll discuss McCain's
book in September and Obama's in October. The books are available at
25% discount at Books Galore in Watkinsville, and you receive an
additional $1 off if you buy both autobiographies.
This month's Third Thursday discussion (August 21st), then, will just be
a good chance to talk politics and to plan our upcoming slate of books.
Join us! We'll meet at 6:15 at Five Points Deli on Epps Bridge Parkway.
2. The top-secret line-up for "Dancing with Athens Stars" will be
revealed Wednesday, September 10th, at 5:30 -- at the Family Protection
Center on Lexington Highway in Athens. (The facility -- chock full of
services for adult and child victims -- is next door to the police
station. The center provides resources for a wide swath of counties,
including Oconee.) A prominent and very likable Oconee resident is one
of the stars in the March 1st show. Come and discover who you know in
the line-up and cheer these brave folks on at this fun, free event!
We'll also reveal the winner of the "People's Choice" slot in the show.
Voting is on-going through August at
www.project-safe.org/index.php?id=18&pullNewsID=42
3. Back to Democratic matters! We have several excellent candidates
who need our support. Help us spread the word about the keenly
intelligent Rich Clark, for example, who is running for School Board.
And don't let the paper mislead you about Bobby Saxon's viability in his
campaign against Paul Broun! Anyone who meets Bobby will be impressed.
Throw a house party, offer to canvass or make some calls, or chip in
with a donation to help local Democrats counter the Republicans' deeper
pockets.
The Obama people are well organized in Oconee and beyond. They'd like
to meet you! I'll paste in a message below from the Regional Field
Director, who invites you to come to the new Obama HQ in Athens any
Tuesday for an open house.
All for now!

=======================
Dear Friends,
I hope this letter finds you well. My name is Alex DeGolia, and I am
the Regional Field Director with Barack Obama's Campaign for Change for
the Athens/Northeast GA Region. I have had the opportunity to stay in
the home of Madelyn and Mark Osborn over the past seven weeks since
arriving in Athens. They have been incredibly welcoming and supportive
in a place where I literally knew no one upon arrival, and are of course
the reason that this email is reaching you now.
I arrived in Georgia more than three months ago, on May 5, 2008. I was
the second staff member to arrive in the state since the primary on
February 5th, and that only because the friend and fellow staffer I came
down with tends to drive faster than I do. I was thrilled to help build
a field program from the ground floor, but planned to stay and work in
Atlanta for six weeks before returning to my apartment, girlfriend, and
job search in Chicago. That hasn't exactly played out, and so I came to
Athens in the middle of July to build the campaign here. We now have an
office in Athens, another opening in Winder this weekend, and hopefully
will have two more in the near future in other parts of the region.
Now that our office has opened in Athens, we are beginning a program
called "Obama Tuesdays," for which we will hold an open house every
Tuesday evening as both an opportunity for people to learn more about
the campaign and get involved volunteering for us, as well as to simply
come together to meet your neighbors, talk about our campaign here in
Athens (even if you're not a convinced supporter, we'd love for you to
come by and give us the opportunity to change your mind), and generally
get to know the campaign in Athens.
The first Obama Tuesday will be taking place this coming Tuesday, August
12th. We are located at 2092 Prince Ave, next to the medical office of
Dr. James Brown (we share a back parking lot) and just before Hawthorne
Ave. Our office is of course always open, but we expect people to begin
arriving around 5pm. I encourage you to come, bring your friends and
family, and meet our staff and our fabulous volunteers. I look forward
to seeing you there.
Best,
Alex DeGolia
