BOC Work Session 9/25 and 9/26 Court House Grand Jury Room

Citizens
Following is the text of the Board of Commissioners agenda for the work session scheduled for 9/25 and 9/26.  This is an important session as the ground work will be laid for changes in county government structure and for the upcoming SPLOST vote in March 2009.  Word is, the BOC will be looking to raise and spend $40M in sales taxes over 6 years.  The SPLOST tax has been looked on as a big piggy bank.  Problem is, the law that the voters will be asked to approve will be written with so little specificity the Board can pick and choose what is done with the money.  Citizens should expect  the current Board to be more specific about the projects that will be included it the law.

Many of you know that SPLOST funds cannot be used for normal operations.  Only specific purposes such as roads, jails etc can be included.  All the subsequent maintenance and operation of these projects must be paid from other sources such as property taxes.  Some of you may have noticed the substantial increases in the parks and recreation and jail budgets to staff and  maintain these new projects.

I will be unable to attend these work sessions but I hope that many of you will.
