Jim Powell Campaign Update 10/16/2008

This has been another great week for the Jim Powell Campaign for Georgia Public Service Commission.

On Wednesday, Jim earned the endorsement of the state's largest newspaper, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The endorsement editorial, "Powell's Priority is YOUR Wallet," accurately described Jim's commitment to stand up for consumers, as opposed to his opponent, Lauren "Bubba" McDonald, who was voted off the PSC by Georgia voters six years ago.

"Powell is experienced and knowledgeable on energy issues, having retired as a U.S. Department of Energy executive. Just as important, he will bring an independent outlook to the commission at a time when the PSC may be asked to approve multibillion-dollar investments by Georgia Power and others for nuclear and coal plants. If Georgia voters want somebody to look out for their wallets and pocketbooks, Powell is the clear choice."

The AJC also described an incident during McDonald's past term on the commission, when he "Not only secretly (did Georgia Power's) bidding, he created a lie to hide that fact from the Georgia Public." Click here to read the entire AJC endorsement of Jim Powell.

Jim also received the endorsement of the Flagpole newspaper in Athens today.  Ben Emanuel and Pete McCommons said:

"Formerly as a Democrat, now as a Republican, Lauren "Bubba" McDonald has evolved into sort of a political hack. His Democratic opponent, Jim Powell, is a retired U.S. Department of Energy official brimming with knowledge of energy regulation and determined to open up the process to encourage sustainable energy production and entrepreneurship. The Libertarian, Brandon Givens, has good ideas but little experience. Jim Powell is clearly the best choice."

The campaign received the endorsement of Creative Loafing in Atlanta.  Click here to read the entire text.

Earlier in the week, it was reported that Jim's opponent has received 80% of his campaign contributions from executives, corporate lobbyists and lawyers of the utilities the PSC is charged with regulating. The AJC reported that McDonald "began burning up the phones within hours," and "Georgia utilities answered." Click here to read the entire article on the utilities' financial stake in Bubba's campaign.

By contrast, Jim has pledged not to accept utility-tied contributions. We need you to help elect Jim he can provide a voice for Georgia consumers. Please click here to make an online contribution today.
