Subject: [oconee] Movie Night for Area Democrats: W

Hi!

Please join local Democrats to see Oliver Stone's new movie, W, at Ciné
on Monday the 24th at 7 PM. (More info on the movie is pasted in below.)

We get together occasionally to see and discuss political films and to
support Ciné, a wonderful arthouse theater that supports the community
in myriad ways.

The theater is located at 234 W. Hancock in downtown Athens. Parking is
free across the street from the theater (most) Monday evenings -- and
the movie tickets and popcorn are cheaper on Mondays, too!

Hope to see you!

Go Jim Martin and Jim Powell!

"You're a devil in a white hat" declares Laura Bush (Banks) after a
cocky W. (Brolin) puts the moves on her during a backyard BBQ shindig.
Director Stone is one of the more well known Hollywood liberals, so
you'd think that he would agree with Laura. But you're not going to come
to that conclusion after watching W. The movie never intensively attacks
Bush. Instead, we are presented with a sincere portrait of a young W.
originating in a frat house progressing all the way to the White House.

Brolin's Bush is no monster either. He's a slob, a moron, a brat- but
no, not a villain. You can leave that up to Rove and Cheney (a terrific
Jones and Dreyfuss) who come off as the devils sitting on Bush's right
shoulder- while the token angel that should be on his left is
nonexistent, and we're left with a chump instead. Delivering the highest
caliber performances- Brolin and a nearly unrecognizable Newton
practically burglarize the movie in their depiction of W. and Condoleeza
Rice. Brolin with his brilliant, bonehead demeanor manages to supply
major emotion without evident exaggeration and Newton resonates with her
withdrawn but frequently appealing personality. In fact, never has so
much been said by speaking so little.

Opening doors behind classified areas, dealing with egos, father-son
issues, ambition, and tragedy- the film is fast paced and hardly
falters, making it Stone's best film since NIXON. Stone seems to really
find his most complete vision when he profiles controversial political
figures. It may all be based on fact, but of course you need to read
between the lines too....If you're a devout liberal, this take on Bush
may not be evil enough for you. If you're a devout conservative he may
not be as much of a saint as you want him to be. But if you can put
aside your personal politics for two hours, you'll find W. is a powerful
portrayal of one of the most influential political figures- for better
or worse- of our times. moviepicturefilm
