MLK Day of Service Report to USAService.org

Oconee County resident Carl McGrath (kneeling) organized a clean up of an eye sore area in Greensboro, in Greene County, as a direct result of canvassing the neighborhood during the campaign for President Barack Obama. I wish I had participated and brought my son, but we are both a bit under the weather right now.

All, Here's the report I sent to USAService.org regarding the service we performed today in the Maple Circle neighborhood of Greensboro. Also, check-out the attached photo, which I included in my report:

Tell us your event story:

We removed debris that had been dumped over the years in a ravine on Maple Circle . We rid the neighborhood of an eye sore and the health hazard it posed to the Community. We were a diverse, biracial group ranging in age from 12 years to 74 years, one homeless man, and Republicans, Democrats and Independents. The Republicans came because they received an email message from Michelle Obama encouraging them to sign-up on USAService.org where they located our project.

What are your pluses for the event? What went well? What were the highlights?:

Clean-up projects are great because there is something for everyone to do and to feel useful and productive. In just three hours our group of 18 moved a tremendous amount of debris, enough to fill two large dumpsters. We were especially pleased about having rescued over 30 television sets from this landfill.

What are your deltas for the event? What would you have done differently? What should be improved next time?:

At our request, the city provided one dumpster. We should have requested two dumpsters.

The dumpster should have been placed 50 yards closer to the site.

We should have segregated the tires (about 40) and building materials from the rest of the debris, as we did with the electronics.

That's the report. It was wonderful working with all of you!!  Thanks!!!

Carl
