I'm still standing and here is a lot about very little

Adam Thompson of the Athens Banner-Herald wrote me an email today to ask if everything is all right, and I replied that I have been very busy and bummed out massively about the death of guitarist Randy Bewley of Pylon. I need to add more content to this blog and keep people posted on my rather narrow viewpoint of what is going on in Oconee County, Georgia.

Truth is not a whole lot has been happening in my neck of the world. About the most exciting thing I have done recently is buy a glow in the dark 28.5 gram basketball for my son. Lowell decided not to play soccer this spring and also asked not to be talked into playing on either the Oconee Recreation Department or Oconee Futbol Club traveling teams. With the economy the way it has been lately, that was not a difficult decision to swallow. Some parents would make their little soccer prodigies play even if they did not want to, but honest to goodness I could tell he was not that into it the last season we played on the big field. I am sure he could excel with the individual instruction offered by the Oconee Futbol Club, but we do not have a spare $450 for soccer academies right now. It is a treat for us to go to the Taco Stand on a Friday night where we found our neighbors eating and sat down with them. Then it is off to Publix and or Rite Aid for some coupon shopping or keeping it in one small carrying basket as opposed to the traditional wheeled shopping cart.

Glad we are getting rain and sorry that part of the Georgia Nature Center was mowed over by the recent tornado. It was also a near disaster with the big old tree falling over on the third base dugout of the Rocket Field baseball diamond. Thanks to Mayor Jim Luken of Watkinsvlle for turning out for the recent TDR educational summit at the Library and extended raspberries in the direction of all of the members of the Board of Commissioners for not coming to hear the speech by Dr. Russ Page. I did not stick around as I have my son with me on the weekends and did not want to bore him to tears with that right now.

Happy to see the reopening of Floyd's Grill in Watkinsville, although when I went in there the other day lots of little things were wrong with our order (none really worth recounting here and I am sure they will get worked out soon). I will be willing to chalk that up to getting the feng shei of the reborn restaurant going again in the smoothest way possible. The flow you know is everything in the restaurant biz. I have not been eating out a whole lot lately and should be biking more and more. With the warmer weather and the blooming flowers perhaps I shall. As my friend Jeff said, watch out for the panthers and drunken ADAs. That is Assistant District Attorneys for those of you who do not know.

As long as I am referencing the legal profession, I must give huge props to the fine employees of the Oconee County Sheriffs Department and Oconee County Clerk of Courts' office. Both of them always go the extra step, no matter what the screw up on my end, and are always courteous, professional and friendly, unlike say, Gwinnett County, where you can't do squat without sending a certified check or money order first. Just a much deserved thank you very much from an underpaid Office Manager at an overworked law office in that bigger city 10 miles away.
