Getzen Lecture on Government Accountability: Effective American Policy
in a Dangerous World. Sponsored by the School of Public and
International Affairs and the Department of Public Administration and
Policy. Former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt

Annual Holmes-Hunter Lecture. Chief Justice of the Georgia Supreme Court
Leah Ward Sears delivers this year's lecture. The Holmes-Hunter Lecture
honors Charlayne Hunter-Gault and the late Hamilton Holmes, who in 1961
became the first African-American students to enroll at UGA. Lecture
speakers focus on race relations, black history or aspects of higher
education with implications for race relations. 3:00 p.m. UGA Chapel.

Terry Leadership Speaker Series: John Jackson, President and CEO, Bank
of Atlanta. Sponsored by the Institute for Leadership Advancement at
Terry College of Business. John Jackson (BBA '76) has been in banking in
Atlanta for almost 30 years and currently serves as the president and
CEO of Bank of Atlanta, a community bank located in the midtown area. He
started his career with Bank South, focused on retail banking, consumer

Larry M. Bartels, director of Princeton University's Center for the
Study of Democratic Politics, delivers this year's Parthemos Lecture.
Bartels' newly published book Unequal Democracy debunks myths about
politics in contemporary America, using the widening gap between the
rich and the poor to shed light on the workings of American democracy.

Ramsey Lecture: The World is Fat - Fads, Trends Policies and Products
that are Fattening the Human Race. Sponsored by the Department of
Kinesiology and the College of Education. Barry Popkin, Carla Smith
Chamblee Distinguished Professor of Global Nutrition at the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, gives the talk. Popkin directs the
Interdisciplinary Center for Obesity.He has published 290 refereed
journal articles and is the author of a new book entitled The World is
Fat, published by Avery-Penguin Publishers in 2009. Reception at 3:30
