Dr. Larry Nackerud, professor at the School of Social Work at the
University of Georgia, will present a slide show about the members of
President Obama's Cabinet at 4 PM on Sunday, May 17th, at the Oconee
County library in Watkinsville.

The free, public presentation is a part of an occasional series of
Sunday lectures sponsored by the Oconee Democrats, who bring engaging
speakers to Oconee County to discuss issues of importance to the county
and nation.

Dr. Nackerud, the recipient of several teaching awards, specializes in
welfare reform and is an expert on immigration and refugee policy in the
United States. His research often expands understanding about the
myriad problems the poor face that drive them to welfare (such as health
problems, a lack of education, and a constricting job market).

Nackerud has worked in wide-ranging settings that include a reservation
in Montana, a psychiatric hospital in Alaska, and more recent community
development outreach in Haiti.

His interest in the men and women who serve in President Obama's Cabinet
stems from an awareness of the roles that an individual's background and
allegiances sometimes play in policy formation.

Jonathan Veit, the chair of the Oconee Democrats, said, "It will be
interesting to hear Dr. Nackerud's insights into the people and
personalities behind the new administration's much-needed initiatives
such as health care reform, energy independence and environmental
protection."
