Jonathan called the meeting to order at 7:30 PM.
Minutes: The minutes from the April 5th meeting were approved unanimously after a motion by Dan Matthews.
Treasurer's Report: Treasurer Violet Dawe was absent so there was no report at this time.
OLD BUSINESS:
Report on Gubernatorial Ice Cream Social: David Poythress and Duboise Porter, two of the Democratic candidates for Governor, were present. Thurbert Baker was contacted, but he did not appear. Jonathan commented not enough people were present at this event, but Pat Priest thought it was well attended. Members present, who attended the event, gave their pro and con opinions.
Report on Sunday Series with Dr. Nakarud: The lecture given by Dr. Nakarud, focused on President Obama's Cabinet and their politics. Comments were given by members who attended this lecture. The speaker will give another lecture in August at the Trump's Democratic Breakfast. Some of the members addressed the problem of low attendance at these lectures.
Adopt a Road Clean-up: Only a small group of the members were present for the clean-up on April 25th, but they managed to get the cleaning done. There was some discussion of the two papers in Oconee County and their unfairness towards the Oconee Democrats. Jonathan will meet with the editors of The Oconee Enterprise and The Leader to discuss their unfairness towards the group.
NEW BUSINESS:
Watkinsville Litter Pickup: Mayor Jim Luken approached Jonathan with a match between the Democrats and Republicans where there will be a litter pickup on March 30. Those participating will leave from the entrance to Call's Creek. Jonathan would contact other county parties to participate.
Ideas for future events: There was some discussion about several of the events including the bicycle commuting lecture by Jonathan Veit and Tony Glenn. Other possible discussions of future lectures were bankruptcy and foreclosure, maintaining septic systems, and a historical walking tour of Watkinsville.
Miscellaneous: Pat Priest discussed some of the future books the Book Group will be reading.
Next Meeting: As there was no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 8:45 PM. The next meeting will be on Thursday, June 18th, at 7:30 PM in the Oconee County Annex Building.
Respectfully submitted,
Rita M. Bennett
