Many projects, recruitment ideas await Oconee County Democrats

The Oconee County Democratic Committee met and welcomed new member Herman Smith this wet evening at the Governmental Annex on Highway 15.  It was not as packed as our last meeting, but the talk of the turnout was lively and well informed through out the evening. The fact it was going on opposite of the Jeannette Rankin Dinner with Melissa Fay Greene was noticed as well.

Republican Sheriff Scott Berry will be leading our "very popular" (according to vice Chair Ann Stoneburner) Saturday Stroll from the Courthouse to the Jail and perhaps the E-911 Center - rumor has it that Sheriff Berry will be toting folks down to the jail in the paddy wagon, and committee members were anxious to get help for stroll organizer Pat Priest Saturday morning. Stoneburner and her husband Dr. Robert Wyatt have been on every stroll but both have to be out of town this weekend. Any help anyone can present on the tour would be welcome. Having been on Berry's tour, I can highly recommend in a non-partisan manner. It is fascinating to see the inner workings of the Oconee County Jail and something worth seeing for any taxpayer or resident.

The city of Watkinsville is also having a stream and Harris Shoals Park clean up Saturday morning opposite the Berry led tour of the jail.

Lengthy reports were given on both the highly successful turn outs of the Town Hall Meeting with Congressman Paul Broun and the Health Care Debate in Oconee Veterans Park organized by Michelle Smith. This Smith and our chair Jonathan Veit have been carrying on a mutual admiration society via email since the event which was overwhelmingly civil and polite despite some chest thumping and discord on both sides of the debate.

The most disturbing news of the evening was that the State Democratic Meeting a few weeks back in Dublin could not go on for lack of a quorum. They will try again 10:30 am Saturday, November 3 at the IBEW building at 501 Pulliam Street SW in downtown Atlanta not very far from I-20 and the State Capital. Democrats have no chance in hell of recapturing the gold dome if they cannot get more than half of their 159 county chairs and state party people to attend a damn meeting.

The state party has also written an edict to try to organize four community service events. Much was made of the long list of activities the Oconee Democrats already do, but the Adopt a Road service clean up of the Oconee Connector (Mars Hill Road) was slated for Saturday, November 7th and to meet at the Fire Department.  Elaine Whitmire is organzing grocery bagging for the Seniors in connection with the State Party.

Finally from the state if you want to be State Democratic Secretary to you may do so at www.georgiademocrat.org/resources or email ashley@georgiademocrat.org.

Oconee Democratic Committee Secretary Rita Bennett will be hosting a yard sale at her home on 15 School Street during the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce's Fall Festival all day Saturday, October 17th. 50% of the funds raised from the yard sale will go to the Northeast Georgia Food Bank.

Discussions were held concerning a Watkinsville Cemetery Clean with perhaps members of the Moore's Ford Memorial Committee and or Bethel Baptist Church up with possible Walk in the Cemetery with modern folks portraying their forbearers some time in the future. A garden walk for next year was discussed as well as exploring Relay for Life April 30, 2010.
