Subject: [oconee] The Tipping Point
Two things:
First, I wanted to let you know we raised $1,010.00 for local charities with
our series of Saturday Strolls! Thanks to all of you who joined us to
walk or share their expertise or enthusiasm for the town and its
history! See more about the stroll scheduling for next year below if
you're interested.
Also wanted to let folks know that the December book for our book group
is The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. It's an influential and
entertaining book about how small things can tip trends forward toward
success. We'll meet December 30th to discuss it. Perhaps you can find
time just before the New Year to get together with us for a robust
discussion. We'll meet at Five Points Deli on Epps Bridge Parkway at 6.
Enjoy the holidays!

And for some fine-tuning for next year's strolls: I wanted to respond to
Dave Jarrett's message about the scheduling conflict with the
Athens-area Democrats' breakfasts.
I'm late in responding because I've been out of town.
I know that the overlap was a problem once every month, but what makes
such public events work best is the regularity of time and place. (And
I'm hoping next year won't be too complicated, as we're thinking of
moving from the local park -- for a month's worth of strolls -- to
another site like the Chappelle Gallery, where we'll park before heading
off to tour the great local towns that make up the county.)
It worked well this year that people could think . . . It's Saturday;
there must be a stroll scheduled . . . and we specifically hoped to get
people out to shop at the Farmers Market at the Eagle Tavern.
Saturday mornings sure are busy!
Maybe we could cooperate to adjust the time of day a little differently
so that people could do both events.

Could you not schedule it on the same Saturdays as the Athens Area
Democrats breakfasts so we could go to the breakfast on the first Sat
of the month and the Stroll on a different Sat. Putting them up
against each other reduces the potential turn out of each. Dave

Thanks, Ann, for your nice note and for your help in organizing the
strolls! You introduced quite a few of the walk leaders, too, and
spent many a Saturday morning right there with me. Robert was a
terrific stroll leader.
We sure learned a lot about Watkinsville -- and the interesting
people who call it home -- didn't we?
Here's to a shorter series in 2010 -- but with some neat new sites
to explore. We're thinking we'll have a month's worth of walks
centered at Harris Shoals Park (with experts on trees, aquatic
life, spiders, and more!) . . . and others based out of the
Chappelle Gallery (and its parking lot); we'd travel from there via
a van to -- on separate occasions -- the Elder Mill Cemetery, the
covered bridge, and towns such as Bishop and Farmington.
Please send any ideas you have my way -- for walk leaders or sites
of interest!
Thanks!

I just wanted to take a moment and congratulate Pat Priest on the
Saturday Strolls. She had a great concept and cleverly engaged a
host of guides to make it happen. From July through October, she
gave over her Saturday mornings to introduce the guides,
participate with questions and fresh ideas, and collect $1,000.00
for charities and non-profits that ranged from OCAF to Relay for
Life. By crediting the Oconee Democrats as the sponsors, she made
the Saturday Strolls our biggest fund raiser. Even more
importantly, there are a host of citizens who have seen our
county from new and different perspectives that will enrich their
involvement in civic affairs.
