Books and Birds
Books and Birds on the docket for Oconee County Democratic Committee
Quick updates with more details far below!
1) The book we're reading for our community-wide book group this month
is Howard Zinn's classic, wonderful "A People's History of the United
States." Actually, we're just reading the first 13 chapters . . . with
the last half up for discussion the following month. We meet the last
Wednesday of each month at Five Points Deli on Epps Bridge Parkway . . .
at 6. Drop in sometime!
2) The Saturday Strolls in Watkinsville are up and running . . . and
terrific! This Saturday's stroll is all about birds and their nests,
and the guide is Steve Holzman, who works for the US Fish and Wildlife
Service. That's at 9 AM at Harris Shoals Park . . . and the $5 per
person fee benefits the Oconee Rivers Audubon Society. I've asked Steve
to bring along some of the cool (and reasonably priced) bird and bat
houses he makes, as we'll be talking about things you can do in your own
backyard for bird (and wildlife) conservation.
E me if you'd like to know more!

Here's more about Saturday's stroll -- and Steve:
Holzman received a B.S. in Zoology from Southern Illinois University and
an M.S. in Wildlife Biology from the University of Georgia, where he
studied the population dynamics of coyotes in south-central Georgia. He
has worked on endangered gray bats in Alabama, black ducks in New
Jersey, and northern spotted owls in Oregon. An avid birder since
1986, he has been known to look for northern owls in Minnesota in minus
50-degree weather and rare Texas birds in the sweltering Lower Rio
Grande Valley. He is the conservation chair of the Georgia
Ornithological Society.
Holzman will lead a mile-or-so walk along the shoals and wetlands.
Participants pay just $5 per person to join the hour-long walk; children
12 and under admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
Harris Shoals Park is located on Experiment Station Road in Watkinsville
(between the 441 Bypass and the Watkinsville City Hall). No
reservations are necessary. Participants should gather at the back of
the park near the shoals. The group meets rain or shine unless
dangerous weather threatens. Check out the series line-up of expert
guides, topics and designated charities at www.oconeedemocrats.org.
