Oconee BOE gives incumbents and qualified challengers the inside track to replace Breedlove

Is there something rotten on School Street? Just when I thought they could not get any wackier with the appointment process to finish the term of Tennessee-bound Tom Breedlove, they seem to outdo themselves once again in the closed door meetings of the BOE.

Never underestimate the committee decision making process, especially when done in private.

Somehow the Oconee County Board of Education continues to make the absolute worst decision when it comes to perpetuating an image of leadership buffoonery and insider cronyism continuing in our public education system.

The four candidates who have paid the $54.00 before the recent weeklong timeframe and qualified for the forthcoming 2010 Board of Education Elections - primary and general - will get first crack at replacing Tom Breedlove's recently vacated position. So that means Mack Guest, Kim Argo, and qualified challengers Democrat Carter Strickland and Republican  Mark Thomas get to decide if they want to complete the two and a half years left on Tom Breedlove's abandoned term.

The Board gets to decide amongst themselves if they will accept any of these applied candidates with the inside track.

Only then are the rest of us allowed an opportunity to apply in the same manner than Christine Franklin and others were appointed to fulfill unexpired terms in the past. I would point out the obvious in that previous appointment procedures worked fine to find candidates sometimes numbering in the teens to fill the vacated slots. I even applied for a couple of BOE vacancies realizing full well I had a snowball's chance in Hell but doing my civic duty nonetheless.

Given the odd manner the BOE have evidently decided upon to fill the slot ignoring past procedures and successes; I would hope the guilty conscience of some of the incumbents would allow the one of the qualified challengers to be appointed at the very least, but somehow I expect the contested slot to be filled by Guest or Argo (although I would love to wrong on this one).
