I wish....

I wish Tammy Gilland would run against Sarah Bell for the chair of the Oconee County Board of Commissioners in two years no matter what the outcome of Gilland's race against Margaret Hale this time around.

I wish the Oconee County Board of Education would have simply followed precedent in picking the replacement for Tom Breedlove from the get-go instead of getting all weak-kneed and ineffectual with their wishy-washy, spineless, gutless maneuvers of back tracking on their own policy after a Democratic candidate named Carter Strickland dared to speak the truth and call out a few of the more deserving people needing to be off of anything to do with the public educational leadership of our children.

I wish that bipartisan politics really occurred in Oconee County instead of former School Board members getting sweetheart deals at inflated prices behind closed doors in secretive deals with municipal governments that have no business whatsoever getting involved in the land shenanigans of another entity all together.

I wish that more people would turn out for candidate forums then the same 250 people that seem to be at every political event in the county.  I wish it was mandatory to make graduating students register to vote before receiving a diploma.

I wish the voting turnout in Oconee County was equal to the turn 80%+ turnout a few years back when we had a liquor referendum on the ballot.  I wish there was not a whisper campaign against Margaret Hale claiming she was somehow unprepared. She is more prepared then a lot of public servants and some department heads who have not even graduated from high school.

I wish kids would not bully one and other in camps and elsewhere. I wish kids would not provoke bullying by calling other kids names until they get their ass kicked.

I wish we had a public swimming pool in Oconee County.  I wish we had one indoor in the senior center for the elderly already as was once offered to an indifferent government for a mere drop in the bucket incentive of $10,000.00.

I wish we had an Elder Mill State Park. I wish we had the leadership in the Board of Commissioners to have purchase Al Cuming's house and property when it was recently on the market. I wish we had leadership on the BOC angry enough to do something about this absolute disgrace and would work with the public in securing this crown jewel of Oconee County.

I wish we had a Congressman who would secure Federal Stimulus dollars for Oconee County to do many of the big picture projects that everyone seeking office seems so afraid of these days. I wish we had more public works projects in Watkinsville, Bishop, North High Shoals and Bogart to help stimulate the local economy.

I wish it were more fashionable to speak your mind, support our teachers, and pay our police better. I wish people did not have to get their belongings tossed out on their front lawn by the Sheriff's Department in a dispossessory warrant like a neighbor did on Lawanna the other day. I understand that something needs to be done when people get ridiculously behind on their mortgage, but I would think there has to be a more dignified approach to removing people from their homes then filling up the yard full of their personal effects. I would also think there are better things for our Sheriff's deputies to be doing rather than evicting people out of their homes.

I wish we were more inclusive than exclusive. I wish our restaurants were more crowded for every meal. I wish more farmers would turn out for the farmers market. I wish there was a bike path well off the shoulder of Whitehall Mill/Simonton Bridge Road.

I wish there were more crosswalks like the one Chief of Police Lee O'Dillon thought up and had painted on Harden Hill Road near the driveway for Ashford Manor Bed and Breakfast where Shakespeare was being performed on the grounds this evening. I wish there were a few more signs pointing direction to our more hallowed halls of performance.

I wish we did not have to only share our fellowship behind the jacket of a secret society or only behind church doors. I wish we were all as friendly and accepting as they are in Krimson's or the Bed and Breakfast.

I wish we had more sidewalks and less crumbling shoulders on our aging roads.  I wish we could pay our firefighters. I wish there was less litter coming from the cars on Barnett Shoals Road.  I wish there was a safe way to bike to Athens for an old fart like me. Maybe I should try Bishop first.
