It's a perplexing question for writers: What is voice? Though there are as many definitions as writers, one key seems common to each interpretation: voice equals personality.  And every writer understands - subconsciously at least - that readers respond to personality as readily as they do to story.

Finding voice in writing is critical for the success of any story.  The purpose of this course is, first, to identify what voice means to each student and, second, to review ways to create the desired effect of voice. The class will consider the role of the writer, the character(s) and the reader in the development of voice. Particular attention will be given to the use of narrative rhythm and dialogue.

In addition to the six-hour, full-day session, there will be one free follow-up session for class members to discuss their work as it relates to voice. (Date and place to be determined.)
