Random reasons I love living in Oconee County, Georgia

From time to time I like to reflect why I love living where I do, so the following is not in any particular order of why I live in Watkinsville, Georgia:

  1. Safe neighborhoods. We have had one major accident in 10 years here in Morgan Manor Estates, and only one instance of anyone getting anything ripped off that I am aware of.
  2. People mind their own business. I do not get many solicitors or religious fanatics coming door to door. When they do ring my doorbell they get a face full of pit bull terrier.
  3. When your dog runs away, it usually comes home. And you can usually find it if it is not too dark and late. Otherwise you wake up to a very cold, sore and groggy doggie.
  4. People aren't too judgmental, except about the crap you leave in your carport. I need to throw more stuff away and luckily my son has taken it upon himself to organize his various athletic endeavors. I am seeking professional help to get myself less domestically challenged.
  5. Weirdness is tolerated and generally not shunned. Music, art, sports, politics, religion, medicine, lifestyles are all explored out here but maybe not as in your face as some are in Athens.
  6. We are courteous and friendly. People will help strangers change a tire or get some gas without asking for or expecting anything in return. While this is not unique to Oconee, I do find it is in abundance here generally.
  7. No imbeciles rule our media. We have remained relatively free of extremism in any direction, so even the more conservative Republican can see the most liberal Democrat at the Publix or Krimson's and remain civil and polite.
  8. We welcome folks from near and far. Oconee is not alone in treating our visitors well here in Georgia, but many professionals from police to parapros in school work hard to make sure it is a place you will remember and want to call home.
  9. We are just close enough to Athens and Atlanta. I would not want to drive every day to the Big City, but I know plenty of people who do. I do drive every day sometimes four times or more to and from Athens.
  10. We support our children. We do have the best schools, public and private, this side of Atlanta, and there is also a large network of support for home schoolers. Adoption is welcome, divorce is not too common (but enough to make the papers) and we have our own marriage factory.  The sports and recreation possibilities can always be improved but we have made huge leaps in a short time in that department.
