Subject: Information for the Athens Redistricting meeting

Hello Friends!

I'm sending you (attached) 2 documents

1) Georgia Research Alliance Redistricting 101

2) Reapportionment Talking Points, May 2011 - GA Democratic House Caucus

Please use these to generate a big crowd at the Redistricting Public Hearings being held around the state (dates in document (1) and in preparing compelling statements to be read at the hearings. Transcripts of the hearings will be critical evidence in the deliberations of the US Dept. of Justice regarding compliance with the Voting Rights Act of 1965 and in any law suits that are brought against the state regarding the methods and outcomes of the redistricting done at the General Assembly Special Session to begin in mid August, 2011.

Please distribute this to others in an effort to make the hearings as productive for Democrats as possible.

Hi all!

Please see again below RJ Hadley's message to all of us about those important redistricting hearings. We are still in need of two people who will videotape the hearing in Athens on May 16. All you need is a tri-pod and digital video camera.

Fer shur there are some proficient videographers in the area!

Hello Georgia Democrats,

Now that U.S. Census numbers have been released, we are moving into a very important phase of the redistricting process. To ensure the fair and equitable drawing of Georgia's political map, we will need the help of active Democrats throughout Georgia. From May to early July, the  House & Senate Legislative & Congressional Reapportionment Committee will hold hearings to get input from the public. The first such hearing will begin next Monday, May 16th in Athens (please see the schedule below).

I have heard concern from many around the state that it's a "waste of time" for Democrats to attend these hearings because the Republicans "control everything" and will "do what they want" anyway. That couldn't be further from the truth. Because of the Republican majority in our state and their continuous attack on middle class families and the poor, it's very important that you make a commitment today to attend one of these hearings. It's also important for your voice to be heard at the hearing, because your comments will be used in any future legal challenges or federal review of the Republican-drawn maps.

We also need at least 2 volunteers for each hearing who will commit to recording video of the events (one to record the hearing panel and another to record public comment). If you are willing to volunteer for this effort, please contact our Communications Director Eric Gray at eric@georgiademocrat.org or 678-278-2108 as soon as possible.

There are a number of informational sessions on the redistricting process and what it means to your county. Contact your local County Party at http://www.georgiademocrat.org/our-party/county-committees/  to find out more and see how you can help.

Thanks for all you are doing as Democrats to make sure that here in Georgia we are WINNING THE FUTURE.
