Athens GOP Forum went well
Went to the Country Inn and Suites this evening at the behest of the Athens GOP forum for the House 113th Special Election, and it was quite the event. Maybe two dozen people were there. At least one candidate in Alan Alexander did not attend but he did send his surrogate, who left quickly. There was an audience member named Brandon who kept asking me afterward about why I was a Democrat since a significant amount of time I spent spouting out what we both considered to be small l libertarian views on certain issues. We talked about immigration, taxes, small business, and some obvious softball questions of which Presidential candidate we voted for and party we caucused with. I was made to feel quite welcome and discussed reasons why the elderly will be hurt most by the (un)fair tax or a consumption tax.
I would wager the person asking the questions wanted Chuck Williams to answer his questions first because he did at six out of the eight first questions. I enjoyed engaging Mr. John Padgett in some witty political barbs back and forth at the end. They were raffling off a Ruger. Chairman Matt Brewster was very cool and kept a tight ship. The secretary Chelsea Magee really did not like my response to drug testing response to the point she got a little teary eyed and in my face at the end.
One gentleman in the back wanted to remain incognito, but he defended Brandon's honor. Most had actually voted for a Democratic candidate at least one time in their lives. I really enjoyed talking politics with and finally meeting James Garland, who wrote a pretty fair piece on me in Sunday's newspaper. I honestly did not see it then. I disagree with the premise of his calculus or else I would not be running. I probably should have been a little less confrontational in my rhetoric and responses, but by in large was treated very kindly.
I swear I heard Sarah Bell mention the words "Living Wage" but I would not care to comment about her intentions or whether she grasps the true meaning of the words. There was an interesting array of mostly over 50 year old people at this event, although there were at least four or five folks younger than me.
