Two Recent Cases of Entering Auto Within the City Limits

A very slight crime wave in Watkinsville - beware, be safe and try not to leave anything out for ne'er do wells to snatch. Many thanks to Mayor Walter for passing this to us, and Police Chief Lee O'Dillon and his police officers for keeping us safe.

Sincerely,
Dan Matthews

Those of us who reside within the City Limits are indeed fortunate when compared to many areas close to Watkinsville, for we experience very little criminal activity.  However to ensure that we don't become a target for the miscreants that travel through, visit or stay.  We, as citizens, must learn and practice some basic crime prevention techniques.  The crime of illegally entering  parked vehicles is one of the most prevalent of  crimes yet one of the easiest to prevent.  Do not leave any items of value or temptation in a parked vehicle and make sure the doors are locked.  A motion light or yard light near your driveway in combination with a locked car containing no items of value presents a layered deterrent to a potential thief.  A neighborhood that calls the police when they see or hear something suspicious or out of the ordinary adds yet another layer of protection.

You have to realize that a certain percentage of any population makes a living by stealing and they spend a great amount of time roaming and looking for easy targets.  They don't want to get caught, consequently every precaution you take to make your property more difficult to steal is to your advantage.

As the old saying goes, "Birds of a feather, flock together" and thieves, within their own circle of acquaintances, communicate which neighborhoods or areas are ripe for picking.  When word spreads that a neighborhood tends to call the police when a stranger is seen roaming around, that neighborhood also gets talked about and criminals will tend to avoid it.  Neighborhoods and cities only have the level of crime they tolerate.

If you would like additional information on ways to protect your property or person, please contact Chief Lee O'Dillon @ lodillon@cityofwatkinsville.com.
