Huckaby: Regents will approve college mergers | Online Athens

The Oconee County campus of Gainesville State College is run horribly both here and from afar in Hall County expensively and inefficiently (it has not been always) and without the least bit or regard for the needs of the students of the area. Instead of working with the University of Georgia in terms of classes and curriculum, it has suffered a lack of enrollment recently and shown a distinct inability to retain either faculty or staff. These are not opinions, they are facts. They have attempted to purchase their way into the local political arena with maximum contributions to the percieved incumbents or Good Ol' Boys without the slightest regard for fairness, compassion, or innovation. They have almost soured their relationship to the University of Georgia, and could have done what Medical College of Georgia in Augusta did long ago. Michael Adams is actually doing us a favor by keeping the growth controlled on the closest alternative mini-college campus, but the Regents and local administration lack vision, planning, and concern for what is actually needed in terms of facilities, parking, recreation, food, coffee, and the list of failures continues to grow by leaps and bounds. They do have a good, thorough and responsive IT program there.
