Athens Academy 6th grade basketball team hosts Madison County 8:30 pm Friday in Athens Premier League title tilt

The Athens Academy boys 6th grade basketball team, coached by Chris Pittard, will play for its second Premier League post-season tournament title in three years 8:30 pm Friday at the Spartan Center hosting Madison County.

The Spartans squad, led by lengthy all-stars Alex Deltchev and Taylor Boswell, took out a scrappy Morgan County team 29-15 Thursday evening in the Oconee Auxiliary Gym at the back of Oconee County High School. Joe Colley and Lowell Matthews played well off the bench getting rebounds, blocked shots, and assists by the bucketful. Slashing and versatile Conner Hatch hit another last second jump shot at the end of the third quarter, just barely inside the three point stripe.

Athens Academy jumped out to a 10-0 lead before the scrappy Morgan County team climbed back to make it a contest. The Spartans' Owen Roberts nailed a jumper and made the three point shoot out as part of the all star festivities Saturday. Colley went three-for-four from the charity stripe.

Avi Patel, John Ward, and Drew Byus came off the bench to help with hustle and defense against the much quicker Morgan County squad. The Athens Academy squad almost always plays all 10 players and never loses much in the transition and substitutions.

Madison County took out the top seed and previously undefeated North Oconee Thunder squad of Jack Mangle and friends 37-34 in an exciting night cap.

For the sake of full disclosure, I am the scorekeeper and father of #9 Lowell Matthews. I also unintentionally unplugged the electronic scoreboard because I am a clumsy big-footed doofus who had to get up and high-five his son some high five for outstanding defense and amazing behind the back saves from going out of bounds. Athens Academy entered the post-season tourney as a three seed and Madison County was the five seed.
