Democratic Party of Georgia Communications Director Eric Gray attends Oconee County Democratic Committee meeting

Eric Gray, Communications Director, Democratic Party of Georgia
The Oconee County Democratic Committee enjoyed swelled ranks last night during their regular March monthly meeting at the Government Annex on Greensboro Highway on the heels of the very successful "fun"-raiser at Krimson Kafe a fortnight back with former candidate for Labor Commissioner Darryl Hicks.

We were also quite pleasantly surprised to welcome the Communications Director of the Democratic Party of Georgia in Eric Gray. He answered every one of our sharp and pointed questions succinctly and honestly and is certainly welcome back anytime. Gray even called others to try to answer our questions about certain obscure procedures for the delegate selection process in Madison at Morgan County High School next month.

The biggest news to come out of the meeting was the resignation of acting director Ann Hudson Stoneburner and the resumption of yours truly as director. This move was long contemplated and quickly enacted in the wake of two successive attempts at getting elected by me for the House 113th race (made the run-off, came in distant second) and the non-partisan Watkinsville Mayoral campaign (came in a very distant second). You cannot run for office and be chair simultaneously so I resigned and Stoneburner was excellent in my stead.  I was also coaching my son in basketball in the Premier League for the last couple of months, and the Athens Academy team made a run all the way to the championship game. Ann and her husband Dr. Robert Wyatt were at a conference for journalists (joining friends) in Hilton Head or Charleston or somewhere in South Carolina. She called during the meeting to see if her vote was needed. It was not, but we appreciate her extended stint as chair. I would like to have a tennis tournament in her honor.

Various moves contemplated by not enacted including moving the day of our meeting, but new member Lana Sheats reminded us that a lot of folks have Bible study or what not with church on Wednesdays. So we shall meet again on Thursday, April 19 at 7:00 pm at Government Annex at 1291 Greensboro Highway. Then we will hope to hear from the State of Georgia head of President Obama's re-election campaign and plot what streets we will clean up for the semi-annual Watkinsville clean up from April 21 through 30th with a trash bin in front of the Library to compete against the local Republicans and their ringers from Clarke County. We will kick their ass as usual in that competition at least.

Sarajane Love read a letter from Mary Mellein of the Keep Oconee Beautiful commission wondering if we would like to "re-up" on our commitment to keep cleaning our mile on the Oconee Connector. Of course we said yes unanimously. We clean up a stretch of the road from 316 to the Golden Pantry four times a year.

It was truly wonderful to welcome Carolyn Crawford, Lana Sheats and another new member to our fold. They are all excited to help us register new voters and get the President re-elected on this day when Barack Obama is in Atlanta. Too bad he could not be part of the shovel turning ceremony at the new Caterpillar plant at Highways 316 and 78.
