Dear Athens Academy Community,

We wanted to share with you some additional information detailed in a press release below which will give you an opportunity to help sixth grader, Kajal Patel.

6TH GRADERS RALLY TO FIND BONE MARROW MATCH FOR CLASSMATE

Saving the life of a friend means finding her 1 in 20,000 match

What do seventy-seven 6th graders do when they learn their classmate needs a bone marrow transplant to save her life? And, what if they learn the odds of finding her right match is 1 in 20,000?  It's simple. They find 20,000 people!

Kajal Patel is a vivacious, 12-year-old girl who has an illness that doctors say can only be cured with a bone marrow transplant. For people of Southeast Asian descent, like Kajal, the odds of finding a correct match is 1 in 20,000. Odds that might sound like a long shot to most but not for Kajal's classmates at Athens Academy.  With the support of their parents and an enthusiastic school faculty, these students are determined to find Kajal's match.
Such a commitment has captured the hearts of the Athens, Georgia community as well as the national marrow donor program, Be the Match, who has launched an unprecedented incentive to help the students find that 1 in 20,000. Now through March 31, anyone in the world can join the bone marrow registry by having a FREE swab kit ($100 value) mailed directly to their home. Free kits must be ordered through Kajal's Facebook page. Visit Facebook.com/BeAHeroForKajal or Kajal's page on Be the Match to order your free swab kit and see if YOU are the match for Kajal.

For those in the Athens area, mark your calendars for Wednesday, March 28, as Kajal's classmates team up with Be the Match and the University of Georgia to host the largest bone marrow registry drive in a single day and break the current Guinness world record. The event will be held at University of Georgia's Tate Center. Visit Facebook.com/BeAHeroForKajal for a complete listing of times and locations.

If you would be willing to have a Drive In A Box sent for a local business or group, you will receive it in about two business days.  Simply send the name of the group and a point person and phone number to Laura Iyer at iyerla@hotmail.com.  She will forward it to Caitlin Martin at Be the Match who will keep track of the requests for us so that they will be collected and included in the March 28th total.

As a marrow donor last year, Athens Academy alum, Devon Farmer '07, has offered to answer any questions from the Athens Academy Community about what is involved.  She can be contacted at devonf88@gmail.com.

Thank you for spreading the word for Kajal!
