Thanks to those who came to the discussion last night

Thank you very much to those who choose to attend the Oconee County Democratic Committee discussion last night at the Government Annex, and to those who did not, we would like to invite you to come next month's meeting Thursday, July 19, 2012 at the USDA conference room.

I have the utmost respect to anyone who takes a chance to run for office. I wish to extend my sincerest apologies to those who feel I slighted or otherwise excluded them, especially Trey Downs and Sarah Bell, and hope that they will at least acknowledge our attempts at asking them to attend our next meeting July 19. They are also well within their right to not attend or decline as politely and quickly as Jennifer Riddle did last night in response to my query to get her to attend the event.

Also I think it is quite tacky and petty (not to mention vindictive) of some people to attempt to dissuade candidates from attending our event, but I do think that is in step with the character or lack thereof of those naysayers.

As it was, we had about two or three too many candidates last night and two or three of our committee members absent. We were there until nearly 10 pm. I think the candidates did a great job in answering our questions.   I do not recall every moment of every candidate's answer but we did inquire as to the health and age of most people, and asked several if they had a blank check and could write it, what would it be for. We also asked what the most difficult decision was that they had made during their tenure if indeed they were previously elected.

I really appreciate Jim Luke and Chuck Horton letting us peak behind the Board of Commissioners curtain to reveal that the Haygoods, Rusty and Daniel, were among the local catalysts for the Caterpillar plant coming to the Orkin tract.

There was one unifying factor there last night, and that was everyone who was present loves Oconee County and wants to serve this area. Regina Quick confirmed she did not like to wear seatbelts.

The bottom line is Democrats love Oconee County just as much as Republicans, and we greatly appreciate those that attended the event last night. I would like to think that some day, some way, we could agree to do these kind of events in cooperation and not make candidates run across town, and I take total blame and responsibility for not making that happen.
