Greetings:

We cordially invite you to the 7 pm "Past Meets Present: A discussion on the history and growth of Watkinsville" on Monday, April 29 in The Sanctuary on the corner of 2ndStreet at Barnett Shoals Rd. in Watkinsville. This will be an exciting event for The Oconee Historical Society (OHS), the citizens of Watkinsville and Oconee County. We hope that you, our special guest, will plan to spend the evening with us exploring Watkinsville's rich history.

OHS is dedicated to developing an inventory of historical assets, gathering oral histories, and creating a repository of historical records for Oconee County.   A first step in meeting our goals was to partner with Cari Goetcheus, UGA Associate Professor in the College of Environment and Design's Historical Preservation Program, to gather and document property deeds, photographs, maps, journals, oral histories, and other valuable records of Watkinsville's past.

Dr. Goetcheus and her 20 graduate students have completed much of their research and they would be honored to share their discoveries with you.  Their research covered all of the following topics and will be presented in written reports, maps and oral presentations.

·       Natural Setting
·       Native American and Territories/Settlements
·       Transportation Systems/Patterns
·       City Boundaries/Round Town
·       Business/Industry/Economics
·       Town Inhabitants
·       Agriculture
·       Residential Areas
·       Education/Schools
·       Churches/Cemeteries

Using information that Dr. Goetcheus and her students gathered as the foundation for discussion, OHS will help Dr. Goetcheus examine the potential for expanding Watkinsville's historic districts in an attempt to enhance its historic landscape.  From our discussions, we at OHS hope that this event will become a cornerstone for developing a more robust heritage education program and lead to the pursuit of new heritage tourism opportunities as an avenue for economic development.

We have provided the attached announcement as your personal invitation and for sharing with others you would like to see attend.  Please Friend us on Facebook atOconeeHistoricalSociety and learn more about this event and our other activities.  We look forward to visiting with you.

Sincerely,

Ben Jackson, President
