Chairman Berlon Will Step Down This Week

Obviously Chairman Berlon's health and personal business dealings are much more important than his leadership in a volunteer position. We wish him the best of luck in the future.

Sincerely,
Dan Matthews

Berlon Steps Down This Week
Ga Dem Party Chair's resignation effective June 9
Atlanta, Ga. - June 3, 2013 - Georgia Democratic Party Chairman Mike Berlon announced today that he is resigning from the state party effective midnight on June 9, 2013.

"Our party bylaws provide the First Vice Chair assumes the chairmanship position in the event of a vacancy. Our First Chair is out of the country until this weekend. In addition, our General Counsel will also be out of the country. Therefore, this is the most appropriate way to proceed," Berlon said.

Berlon said the day-to-day operations of the party will continue through staff and his role for the coming week will be primarily oversight of those day to day operations. Berlon will not be attending the DNC Executive Committee meeting this weekend in Chicago.

"I am concerned only about the continuity of our party and ensuring Democrats get back to the business of demonstrating why we are best positioned to lead this state into the future," said Berlon. "We have a great opportunity to win a US Senate seat here in 2014.  We also have good shot at the governor's race with the right candidate."

Berlon said any decisions regarding the election of a new party chairperson would fall to his First Vice Chair and the party's executive committee after she takes the reigns.

"It has been a great honor for me to serve Democrats in Georgia for so many years. I have made lifelong friends, and I will cherish the memories I have. Georgia has many rising stars within our Democratic ranks and I look forward to seeing our state get back on a strong financial footing with strong public schools, jobs that pay well, and an economy that supports our small business community," Berlon said. ###
