Subject: [oconee] discussing politics and history through books

We had about 20 people at our community book discussion last month, when
we discussed Rachel Maddow's book, "Drift: The Unmooring of American
Military Power."

It's really worth reading to learn the details, for example, about how
Reagan himself -- despite the strong reservations of his Cabinet --
pushed for armed support for the Contras in Nicaragua although that was
explicitly prohibited by Congress and how deeply he was involved in the
secret arms sales to Khomeini in Iran.

There would be a lot less lionizing of Reagan if American citizens read
this book.

But there's much more to the book, too -- for example, a worrisome
section on our nuclear stockpile.

Okay! On to our June book: the classic "Gulliver's Travels" by Jonathan
Swift. It's a witty skewering of politicians and kings -- and human
behavior generally.

We'll meet on Wednesday, June 26th, at Piccolo's in the Bell's shopping
center in Watkinsville. Our discussion gets underway right at 7, but if
you'd like to order dinner or grab a drink, please come early. Several
of us get there at 6:30.

Newcomers are always welcome!

Read on!
