VOL. 2.1.        HIGH SHOALS, GA.,  THURSDAY, JUNE 06, 2013.        NO. 4.

SPEED CONTROL TO RETURN TO HILLSBORO ROAD
Town Council held a called meeting on Monday, June 3d. It was attended by all council
members, Town Clerk Carolyn Pritchett, and residents Horst Klein, Heike Mueller, Karl
Berg, Fred Johnson, and John MacKay. Acting on Violet Dawe's motion, Council voted
to purchase two traffic-calming devices for Hillsboro Road. The particular kinds of devices
and where they will be placed will be decided at the Council meeting scheduled for June
17, 2013, at Town Hall. Council is also considering reducing the speed limit on Hillsboro
Road, from Rays Church Road to SR 186, to 25 mph.
Speeding in front of the park has become a major problem since the speed tables were
removed two years ago. Steve Arnold pointed out that“We've talked and talked and
talked and talked and it's time to do something about it. It's time for action.”Replacing
the previous speed tables is an intricate process; there are issues like liability, engineering,
radar speed enforcement, County road maintenance, motorcycles, and fire trucks to
consider. Steve Holzman noted that“we need to have the knowledge in front of us to
make the right decision. Mike Beall has been tenacious in moving this project forward
since he became mayor; he confirmed his resolve to get Council the information it needs so
the purchase can be completed following the next meeting.
DICKENS ROAD PAVING ON TRACK
The paving of Dickens Lane is in the queue. According to Oconee County, there is
another paving project to commence on June 17; once that is complete, they'll be out to
pave Dickens Lane. The County has promised that“as soon as we have a start date,
we'll let you know.”
SECOND PUBLIC BUDGET HEARING SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 17
Town Council has scheduled the second public hearing on the 2013-14 Town Budget for
Monday, June 17, at 7 pm. The hearing will be followed immediately by the monthly
Council meeting. A budget will likely be adopted at that meeting, so if you want any
input, be sure to attend and speak up.
HIGH SHOALS NEEDS YOUR HELP
Two ad hoc, unofficial, citizens committees have been formed, one to plan the proposed
fitness trail at the park, and the other to design the proposed new Town Hall. If you can
help with the fitness trail, please contact members Heike Mueller, David Lawrence, or
Steve Arnold. If you can help with the new Town Hall, please contact Steve Holzman.
NEW VOTER IN TOWN
Rachel Cass has registered as a New High Shoals voter. A transplant from Cobb County,
Rachel works in the Buckhead area as a commercial Interior Designer. She is an avid
birdwatcher and nature lover.
IN MEMORIAM
Gladys Bradberry, a High Shoals resident for 65 years, passed away on May 20th. She
was 102 years old, a farm girl, and a native Georgian. Ms. Bradberry raised four boys
here, including Harry Bradberry, our second mayor after the town was reincorporated in
the 1960s. She also picked cotton at the top end of Jefferson Road, just past Steve
Holzman's house. The going rate at the time was“two dollars for a hundred”pounds,
and she could easily pick 400 pounds in a day. She will be missed.
