The High Shoals Messenger.

                                                                                                                                                              ;         VOL. 2.1.        HIGH SHOALS, GA.,  THURSDAY, JULY 11, 2013.         NO. 6.
Since 1897
                                                                                                                                                               ;

COUNCIL MEMBER TO MARRY

Town Council Member Steve Holzman will marry Rachel Cass on July 20, 2013. Both birders, they met at a Georgia Ornithological Society meeting in April of 2010. Rachel is an accomplished photographer, so Steve invited her to photograph the nestling vultures in the old barn at Town Park. As their relationship grew they shared birding trips from Alaska to Florida and points between. Last September, Steve proposed to Rachel on the beach at St. Catherines Island, while several oystercatchers, piping plovers, and black skimmers looked on.

The couple will honeymoon on Lake Michigan in Wisconsin. They look forward to a long life together, full of new birds, and new adventures. We wish them well.

PUBLIC HEARING ON SPEED LIMITS POSTPONED
Town Clerk Carolyn Pritchett reports as follows:  "The public hearing that was scheduled for July 15 concerning the ordinance on speed limits has been postponed and will be rescheduled shortly." Apparently there are some legal tasks to complete before the public hearing can occur.
ANOTHER CHANGE OF POSTMASTERS

We're sorry to report that our Postmaster, Amy Lawrence, has transferred to the Bishop Post Office. Don't worry though, she will remain an important part of the Town; Amy is a High Shoals gem.
Patrick Winsett is now at the helm. Patrick lives in Maxeys with his wife Tina (an RN at Good Samaritan Hospital in Greensboro) and two kids. He served in the Navy as a Radarman for 20 years, retiring in 1998. Patrick likes to golf, bowl, and fish. Be sure to stop by and say hi, or call him at the Post Office, 706.769.7500.

VOLLEYBALL GAMES UNDERWAY

Thanks to the generosity of Steve Felker, the park's regulation volleyball court is installed and in use. Check it out with your own group (and ball) or contact David Lawrence, Suzanne Sheldon, or The Messenger to join any games that are already scheduled.

IN OUR OPINION – LET'S RECONSIDER THE EXERCISE STATIONS

Installing exercise stations at Town Park seemed like a good one at first. We've got the room, and who can't use a little exercise now and then? As time has passed, though, your editors have heard from several residents who question whether the stations would get much use. We fear they would see about as much action as the dust-covered treadmills in our basements. If money is to be spent on the park, the better idea is to install additional playground equipment. That's what gets used, and we'd much rather watch kids laughing and playing than adults in raggedy gym shorts grunting, groaning, and straining away a holiday paunch.
