Stokes joins Carter In New Direction for Georgia
Atlanta, Ga. - Nov. 7, 2013 - Former State Senator and former DeKalb County Commissioner Connie Stokes announced today that she is joining Sen. Jason Carter in seeking a new direction for Georgia, by filing paperwork to run for Lt. Governor.

Stokes said the people of Georgia have grown weary of the current administration's ties with big corporations' special interests and want a new direction that will help families get back on stable financial ground.

"We need state leaders who have the right priorities. We need leaders who are focused on hard-working Georgians. We need leaders who want to get people back to work and train for good paying jobs," said Stokes.

Stokes said for too long the state government has been tilted in favor of short-term financial gain for some, instead of jobs and economic growth for all.  A decade-long Republican agenda has strained the state's economy.

"Georgians have given Republicans more than a decade to bring forth their ideas on education and jobs creation. Instead of progress, what we've seen is a broken HOPE Scholarship program, and no meaningful economic recovery," said Stokes. "The people of Georgia want a government that is accountable," said Stokes.

"Connie Stokes is my friend and one of the first people I called as I made my decision to run," said Carter. "While we don't agree on every issue, I support her and I am confident she and I can work together to move Georgia forward."

Sen. Steve Henson, leader of the Senate Democratic Caucus served with Stokes in the Georgia State Senate and said she understands the priorities and needs of Georgians.

"Connie Stokes understands that small businesses are part of the economic backbone of Georgia, because she is a small business owner. Connie is pragmatic and understands the tools small businesses need in order to succeed and in turn grow our economy," Henson said.

House Minority Leader Stacey Abrams said a Carter-Stokes ticket is the change Georgia is looking for.

"I am proud to support Senator Carter and Senator Stokes as they lead the charge to move Georgia forward - on the issues of education and the economy, they will offer fresh ideas that can improve our state," said Rep. Stacey Abrams, House Minority Leader.

"Georgia's citizens deserve our attention, accountability and investment. I am excited to join Jason Carter in this new direction for our state," Stokes said.
