Watkinsville City Council swears in new member at November 2013 meeting

The City of Watkinsville city council met for their usual monthly meeting 7:00 pm Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at the Watkinsville Community Center on VFW Drive just behind the Harris Shoals Park on top of the hill.

After Probate Judge David Anglin swore in new member Marcia "Marci" Campbell, the meeting turned to recognition of this young man Caleb Land of Scout Troop 3537. Mayor Charles Ivie commended the young Boy Scout for his involvement in the municipal government.
The minutes were approved for the called meeting October 21 and the previous regular monthly meeting October 9th after a minor correction from Council member Brian Brodrick. His wife and family were in the crowd and his considerable brood were well behaved on all accounts.

Mrs. Susan Wells Brodrick has been term-limited out after 13 years on the library board and the only scintilla of controversy or lack of resolution may have been that there was no one to step forward to take the City of Watkinsville slot on the Oconee County Library Board. The Council breezed through the agenda with due diligence as always. Margaret Hancock received approval for her interior design firm called Malian Concepts at 1180 Simonton Drive inside the city limits.

The following is from her website:

Dennis Dudley received permission for a license for his B and;D Design Group LLC that will be doing business as Brewer & Dudley at 2 South Main Street, Suite 201. They moved here from Monroe and are involved in land surveying in the area.

An alcohol license was approved for Chops & Hops and Patrick Lang with the dissenting vote of firefighter Mike Link, while a similar request was tabled for J and B Food Mart while they address concerns about asphalt and paving from the council.

Robin Wise appeared late and received an okay for his Encore Vintage and Antiques at 1 School Street. Mayor Ivie and Ms. Wise joked back and forth about certain antique furniture needed by the Mayor, and he said he would come looking for it very soon.
Chief Lee O'Dillon has been out on sick leave for an extended period and we wish him well as he is quite an asset for the City of Watkinsville.

Mayor Ivie also recognized the Oconee Enterprise newspaper for their considerable effort in sponsoring the Christmas parade December 7th at 11:00 am.

He also sought a volunteer to climb a 40 foot ladder to hang Christmas decorations the day before, and none were forthcoming, at least at this meeting.

Briarwood Baptist Church will be having their own holiday celebration Tuesday, December 3rd at 7:00 pm.
Mark Campbell gave his usual storm water update while this author asked for the torn banner to be taken down on Barnett Shoals Road.

Mayor Ivie indicated that sometimes things slip between the cracks, to which I responded that I liked the DAR banners on Main Street and wish that they had been extended to Barnett Shoals and further suggested that the history celebration at Ashford Manor Bed and Breakfast and at Ashford on Main would have been perfect for banners on both streets as well.
