Subpoenas highlight need for independent ethics comm
Sen Dems respond to fed probe

Atlanta, Ga. - December 11, 2013 - Senate Democrats said news that a federal grand jury had issued subpoenas seeking documents related to potential misconduct during a state ethics commission investigation of Gov.Nathan Deal's campaign finances was a step in the right direction.

"For several years, Senate Democrats have pursued legislation that would create an independent ethics commission that would restore public confidence in the governmental process," said Sen. Steve Henson, leader of the Senate Democratic Caucus.

"We must remove control of the ethics process from those subject to its power," Henson said.

Legislation introduced by Senate Democrats would create stable funding and an independent state ethics commission appointed by the judiciary instead of appointed by the governor and legislature.
"Georgians have said repeatedly said they want greater honesty and transparency in government. Now, is the time to make this investment in ethics reform," Henson said.

I hope this is an indication that the Deal investigation is moving forward in a thorough manner," said Sen. Vincent Fort, whip of the Senate Democratic Caucus.
