Double Whammy for Deal
Wow. Yesterday was a VERY BAD DAY for Nathan Deal.
Within the span of just 24 hours, Deal was delivered two pieces of DEVASTATING news that illustrate how rapidly his stock is plummeting.
Larry Sabato's Crystal Ball—a blog that features analysis for elections across the country—downgraded Nathan Deal's race from "Safe Republican" to "Likely Republican."
Responses to natural disasters or statewide crises can have a markedly positive or negative effect on governors, although Deal might've gotten a do-over of sorts with a smooth state handling of the second storm. Perhaps more seriously, Deal has been dogged by ethical questions in office, and there's a possibility that they could be a liability in the fall. Assuming he defeats a pair of primary opponents, Deal is slated to face state Sen. Jason Carter (D), grandson of former President Jimmy Carter, in the fall.
BUT THAT'S NOT ALL…
A recent survey of likely Republican voters conducted by Atlanta polling firm Hicks Evaluation Group shows Nathan Deal is vulnerable as a result of Senator Jason Carter pulling support DIRECTLY FROM HIS REPUBLICAN BASE.
"These respondents were selected only if they voted in Republican Primary elections before, and if they said they planned to vote in the upcoming primary," said pollster and President of HEG, Fred Hicks. "When asked, nearly 8% of these Republican voters said they would vote for Jason Carter in the general election. If this is not merely an expression of anti-Deal sentiment, and Jason Carter is actually turning the Republican base away from an incumbent Republican Governor, then the November election could be much closer than previously expected."
Hicks says that based on 2010's Governor's race, Senator Jason Carter only needs to switch 9.5% of Deal's 2010 voters to win this November.
No wonder Georgia Republicans want to suppress minority votes by shortening early voting and strip the Executive Branch of power to expand Medicaid. They are terrified of the prospect of Jason Carter being elected as the next Governor of Georgia. We knew this would be a great year for Georgia Democrats—now it seems that Republicans are beginning to agree.
