Watkinsville Woods Citizens Committee to Host Informational Meeting July 29, 5-6 p.m.

WATKINSVILLE, GA. JULY 18, 2014 - The Citizens Advisory Committee for the Watkinsville Woods is hosting an informational meeting so adjacent property owners, Watkinsville citizens and members of the public can see and comment on preliminary plans, guiding principles, and timelines for improvements at the new park planned in the heart of the city.  The meeting will be on Tuesday, July 29 from 5-6 p.m. at Watkinsville City Hall, 191 VFW Drive.

Watkinsville Woods refers to the nearly six acres acquired by the city in March from Dr. Roy Ward for a new passive park and greenspace.  Preliminary plans call for access points from Jackson Terrace, Harden Hill Road and Main Street, a wildflower meadow with a birdhouse row, more than ½ mile of trails, and access to some of the finest specimens of tulip poplars, black gum trees and willow oaks in the county.  Limited parking is planned along Jackson Terrace.

Since planning began, the committee has also discovered a rock outcrop on the site.  Visitors entering from the Main Street access point will also pass by the historic "pulpit rock," the site of some of Watkinsville's earliest Methodist sermons.

A meeting of the Citizens Advisory Committee will be held immediately following the public meeting, and citizens are welcome to attend.  The committee hopes to present its recommendations for timing, plans, and budget to the Watkinsville City Council at the August council meeting.  The Citizen Committee is an advisory body to the Watkinsville City Council, which will make all final decisions about the park.  Williams and Associates is providing planning assistance for the park on a pro-bono basis.
